Rebirth in Canaan, No Looking Back Chapter 07

“Elodie.”

His voice was terrifyingly cold.

“Why are you here?”

I leaned against the wall, trying to hold my battered body together as I looked up at him.

“You suspect me?”

Before I could finish, he slapped me.

The force sent me sprawling to the ground, the taste of blood instantly filling my mouth.

“I knew you were going after Chloe.”

“You wanted to drive her away, didn’t you?”

I spat a mouthful of blood onto the

concrete.

“I didn’t.”

He grabbed one of the thugs, not yet dead, from the floor and pressed a gun to the

man’s head.

“Talk. Who sent you?”

The man was shaking violently. He glanced at me, as if seizing a last chance to live, and screamed at the top of his lungs:

“It was her! She paid us to teach that

woman a lesson!”

My heart sank.

Alaric sneered and pulled the trigger without a flicker of hesitation.

He kicked the body aside, strode over, and brought his foot down on my hand.

The pain was so sharp it stole my breath.

He looked down at me, his eyes filled with

contempt.

“You used to know your place.”

“Now you’re using these hands to touch the one person I care about.”

He pulled out a dagger.

“Elodie, I told you. Don’t touch my people.”

The blade flashed.

The dagger plunged through my palm, pinning my hand to the concrete floor.

“Ah-”

My whole body convulsed. Black spots swam in my vision as I fought to stay

conscious.

With the last of my strength, I screamed

at him:

“Alaric! I should have let you die in that alley eight years ago!”

“And I should have never helped you climb to where you are today!”
