When he saw Marnie’s face, Silas’s smile died.

Marnie was stung by the icy indifference in his eyes.

Tears welled up in her eyes.

She’d never seen him look at her like that.

Only at Corinne.

She touched her swollen belly, holding it out toward him.

Her eyes were fragile and tearful.

She gazed at him, eyes brimming with sorrow.

“Silas, you’re still mad at me. I’d have died alongside you that day if not for the baby!”

“But I had to leave. My heart ached terribly as I ran!”

Silas watched her act coldly.

He was drunk, not stupid.

He’d never forget her resolute gaze that day.

Marnie cried for a long time, yet got no comfort from him.

She was hurt and confused. Why had the man who worshipped her changed so suddenly?

Then she saw the photo on the table.

My high school ID photo, tiny as a stamp.

The edges were crumpled, soaked by tears or worn from repeated touching.

Maybe both.

Marnie’s heart jolted sharply.

No. Never!

She’d spent eight years stealing Silas from me.

She’d used every trick to turn his hate into obsession.

She couldn’t let him go back!

Marnie grabbed the photo and tore it apart in resentment.

“Silas, you can forgive that bitch, but not me?”

“Don’t you see that boy was her lover? He stabbed you for her!”

“We can’t let this go. We have to put them in prison!”

Silas roared and lunged for the photo.

He was too late.

He watched the pieces fall.

I’d burned all our photos the night Mom died.

This tiny photo took him many friends and long travels to track down.

It was his only remaining memory.

And Marnie ruined it completely.

“You bitch!”

He slapped her hard.

She stumbled dazedly and crashed hard into the sharp table corner.

The metallic taste of blood filled her mouth. Marnie could even feel her teeth growing loose.

How could he?

How could he hit her?

She was carrying his child!

Marnie glared at Silas bitterly, screaming through her tears.

“Silas Hale, who are you pretending to be loyal for now?”

“When Corinne had a high fever in the hospital, you were with me in your office.”

“When Corinne fainted at her mom’s funeral, you were picking out diamond rings with me.”

“When Corinne jumped into the lake and lost your baby, you were kissing me and promising forever.”

“Where was your love then? It’s too late!”

“Corinne hates you. She’ll never come back, not even if you beg!”
