That day. Standing in the garage. Hearing Derek dismiss me like nothing. My heart died completely.

In that moment, the first person I thought of was Ethan.

“I’ll buy the house back.”

I was about to hang up. His voice came through the receiver. A smile in it. Absolutely steady.

Ethan pulled every connection he had. All his savings. And he bought that emptied, memory-haunted house back for me.

He tracked down the buyer. Offered ten percent above market. All cash. Closed before the original contract finalized.

He took leave. We stood in that hollow house together. And rebuilt it. According to the sketches I’d once drawn. Into the home I’d always dreamed of.

He even built the little breakfast bar I’d scribbled in that grease-stained notebook. Made it from the old oak his father left behind. With his own hands.
