Gavin stayed silent for two seconds, only so I would ask a few more questions.

He had even started to crave the sound of my voice.

For some reason, hearing it made him feel at ease.

“Wendy, stop making a scene, okay? Come back.”

“I really need you right now.”

I laughed in disbelief, as if I were something he could summon whenever he wanted.

Just because he said he needed me, I was supposed to be at his beck and call.

But Gavin misunderstood my silence. For once, his voice softened.

“Wendy, once this rough patch is over, I’ll make it up to you.”

“For the wedding photos you mentioned before, we can do the vintage-glam shoot or a classic white-wedding shoot. Either one is fine.”

“Or we could…”

I could not listen anymore and cut him off in irritation.

“Enough, Gavin.”

“You think far too highly of yourself. I did love you sincerely for many years.”

“But the moment I found out you betrayed me, everything was over.”

Gavin’s lips moved as he desperately tried to explain.

“That’s not how it is, Wendy. It’s not what you think.”

Carter walked in from outside the door, carrying a pink insulated food container.

“Princess Winters, I know you want to outdo me, but you still have to eat properly, right?”

“If your stomach starts hurting because you’re hungry, I’m not waiting for you at the afternoon meeting.”

Even through the phone, I could hear Gavin grinding his teeth.

“Wendy, who is he?”

I said nothing because I did not think Gavin deserved an explanation.

But Carter suddenly leaned in and said in that infuriating tone of his, “I’m her roommate… and her childhood friend and rival.”

Gavin trembled with anger.

“Wendy, how could you live with another man behind my back?”

I was speechless. It was clearly company housing, and we only lived on different floors.

“Gavin, first of all, we’ve already broken up. You should worry about yourself.”

“Second, do I really need to remind you how Hailey got pregnant?”

I hung up and blocked him again.

Carter calmly opened the insulated lunch bag and took out the food.

I was so angry that I punched him.

Only after I sat down did I realize every dish on the table was something I liked.

“How did you know I liked all this?”

Carter smiled casually.

“I learned from Mr. Winters Sr.”

After I hung up on him, Gavin called back.

But he could not get through anymore.

Jealousy took root and grew in his chest. With one sweep of his arm, he knocked everything off his desk.

After he calmed down, he abandoned the mess at the company and went home to pack.

He happened to run into Hailey when she came back. She dropped onto the couch and started complaining.

“Why did you put a limit on my card? Do you know how humiliating it was when it got declined today? The sales associate at the boutique looked at me like I was some kind of joke.”

“I don’t care. If you don’t buy me that new bag today, I’m not going to my prenatal checkup tomorrow.”

Gavin was busy packing and did not take in a word.

“Do whatever you want.”

Hailey stood up in disbelief and pointed at Gavin’s nose as she cursed him.

“Wow, Gavin. Are you falling for someone else again? I knew it. Once a cheating bastard, always a cheating bastard.”

“I really regret cutting Wendy off for you.”

“Do you know that when she was around, she always bought me the whole set whenever a new bag came out?”

At the sound of my name, Gavin finally snapped. He shoved Hailey, who was blocking the doorway, out of his way.

“If you hadn’t seduced me, you bitch, I never would have lost Wendy.”

“You’re not even worth a single strand of her hair.”

With that, Gavin dragged his suitcase and headed out.

After Hailey fell, a sharp pain tore through her lower abdomen, and she convulsed from the pain.

She screamed Gavin’s name with everything she had.

But Gavin was in too much of a hurry to hear her.
