There was a long silence on the other end of the line.

Then my father sighed.

“Wendy, did you and Gavin fight again?”

“I never planned to give those projects to Grant Ventures. You knelt outside my study for three days and nights to beg me for them.”

“Wendy, you can’t keep treating company business like a game just because you’re upset.”

I sat on the stairs and ran my fingers over the bruises on my knees.

Pain pulsed through them when I pressed down.

“Dad, I mean it this time. I’ll report to the Vancouver branch next week.”

“From now on, I won’t be reckless anymore.”

Even my dad knew Gavin was the man I treasured more than anyone.

How could Hailey not know?

That night, just after I got home, my phone rang again.

It was the same number. The little girl’s soft, sweet voice came through.

“Ma’am, why haven’t you accepted my friend request?”

Resentment and hatred spread through my chest.

I wanted to know exactly when everything had changed.

I accepted Annie Grant’s request. She was lively and talkative.

I looked at the cute stickers popping up on the screen, then asked hesitantly, “Annie, do you know how your mom and dad got together?”

The child sent me a long voice message, her tone full of pride.

“Of course! I know Mommy and Daddy’s whole love story.”

“Every night when Daddy puts me to bed, he tells me how they fell in love.”

I stared blankly at the framed photo on the coffee table. It was the first picture Gavin and I had ever taken together.

I spent three years pursuing Gavin, from high school into college.

At our high school graduation ceremony, Hailey had egged me on and nudged me toward Gavin.

She winked at me, signaling for me to lean in and take a picture with him.

Gavin refused. After I bumped into him, he quietly brushed off the spot where I had touched him.

Hailey was so mad that she dragged me over to confront him and made him take a picture with both of us.

I thought Gavin would reject me again, but for once, he actually agreed.

When Hailey sent me the photo, she had deliberately cropped herself out.

I was so happy I could not sleep that night. I made that photo my wallpaper and kept it there for four years.

“Annie, I want to hear the story too. Can you tell me?”

“Sure!”

“Daddy said he fell in love with Mommy at first sight at their high school graduation.”

“Their picture together is still hanging by the bed.”

As she spoke, she sent me a photo.

I opened it and saw the picture from our graduation.

The difference was that I, the person standing in the middle, had been edited out with one tap.

Beside that photo was a set of vintage-glam wedding portraits of Gavin and Hailey.

Two days ago, I had brought up wedding portraits with Gavin and told him I liked the vintage-glam look.

Gavin had not even raised his head, nor had he looked at the reference photos I showed him.

He had only shaken his head and said, “It looks too theatrical, almost creepy. Let’s pick another style.”

Over the past year, I had suggested more than a hundred ideas for our wedding photos.

Gavin had rejected every single one.

So it was never about the style.

I was simply the wrong person.

Annie kept chattering on and on.

She told me how much effort Gavin had put into pursuing Hailey.

From high school graduation to college graduation, it sounded exactly like a fairy tale.

And I was the one who seemed like the other woman who had come between them.

Acid churned in my stomach.

The nausea made me want to throw up.

My phone fell onto the carpet. When I reached down to pick it up, I accidentally turned on the camera.

Annie stopped talking and froze.

She seemed a little afraid of me.

I picked up the phone and asked softly, “Annie, what’s wrong?”

She seemed to breathe a sigh of relief.

“Oh, ma’am, it’s you.”

“So when you’re not acting crazy, you’re actually really pretty.”
