Callan’s breath stopped. He looked at me. Wounded.

“You’re doing this to get back at me? How could you?”

“Those… those were just jokes. I didn’t-”

He saw the sneer on my face. He couldn’t finish.

He didn’t. So I did.

“Jokes?”

“You put the Callan family sapphire bracelet-the one meant for the daughter-in-law-on Celeste’s wrist. That was a joke?”

“You swapped my wedding dress for Celeste’s favorite style. That was a joke?”

“You changed my wedding-the Ireland wedding I spent four years planning -to Iceland. That was a joke?”

“Callan. Ask yourself. Were those jokes? Or were they the truth?”

The blood drained from Callan’s face.

His lips trembled. It took him several tries.

“But all of that-Celeste came up with it. I just thought it didn’t matter.”

“I thought you two were best friends. I thought you wouldn’t care.”

“I was just messing around. I never meant anything by it. I never wanted to

hurt you.”

He looked at me. His voice was raw. His eyes were wet. Like he was genuinely in pain.

Before, I might have softened.

I might have been stupid enough to keep enduring it.

Now it just looked pathetic.

He’d said so much. And all he’d done was drag another woman under the bus. He couldn’t even own his choices alone.

“So tell me. Did Celeste force you to do any of it?”

“You’re an adult, Callan. Learn to take responsibility for your own decisions.”

“Our problem isn’t what Celeste did. It’s that you always put someone else before me.”

I grabbed Graham’s hand and turned to leave.

Callan panicked. He lunged for me.

Graham didn’t hold back this time. He smacked Callan’s hand away. His face was disgust.

“Callan, right? You say you’ve been with Eden for ten years. This is how you treated her?”

“Everything Eden just listed. Every single one trampled her dignity.”

“And you still have the nerve to come beg for forgiveness?”
