Knox opened the door, his narrow eyes fixed on me.

“Not asleep. Something wrong?”

I kept my voice even. “I’ve been renting from you for a year.”

“I’m thinking of moving out-is that okay?”..

He paused.

“Moving out? Where to?”

I made something up on the spot. “I’m in a relationship.”

“I’m moving in with my boyfriend.”

He was quiet for a moment. “You’ve talked it over with him?”

“Not yet,” I said smoothly. “But I’m about to.”

A faint smile touched his lips. “Alright.”

The next morning, Knox left for work.

I’d taken the morning off.

I’d gotten rid of most of my stuff during the last move, so packing was easy-just two suitcases.

After I cleaned the room and the living room, I was drenched in sweat.

I still had time, so I decided to shower before I left.

And maybe use Knox’s body wash one more time.

He’d told me before: “Use whatever’s here. No need to buy your own.”

I’d never taken him up on it-felt wrong to mooch.

But now that I knew he was my online boyfriend?

Even if it was just for show, it felt different.

One last time couldn’t hurt.

1 grabbed my towel and stepped into the bathroom.

Squeezed some of his soap into my palm, worked it into foam.

That clean, addictive scent filled the air.

I always listened to music in the shower.

Fallen Feather: In the shower. Yes.

Fade:Let’s meet. Please.

I was handing the account back to Serena today.

She’d meet him eventually.

Might as well say yes now.

Fallen Feather: Sure. I’ll pick the time and place. I’ll let you know.

Fade:Good. I’m looking forward to it. Now go finish your shower. Get some rest.

Fallen Feather:Mm.

I went back to my music.

A small ache settled in my chest.

If only Serena’s target hadn’t been Knox.

Then I wouldn’t have to move.

I’d moved so many times in my life.

I hated it. Never having a real home.

After my shower, I dragged my suitcases to a hotel near the bank and checked in.

I texted Knox from my real number:I’ve moved out. Thanks for everything.

He replied fast:That soon?

Me:Yeah. Didn’t want to keep my boyfriend waiting.

He typed. Deleted. Typed again.

Finally, one word:Alright.

That afternoon, I logged out of Fallen Feather and handed the account back to Serena.

She transferred the rest of the money without hesitation.

“Not bad, Chloe. You’ve got skills.”

“So-how far did things go? Give me a heads-up.”

I kept it brief. “Everything you’d expect from an online relationship.”

“He wants to meet. You can pick the time.”

“Got it. I’ll sync the chat history so I can catch up-don’t want to blow it when we meet.”

She logged in, scrolled through the messages, and let out a low whistle.

“Damn, Chloe. Didn’t know you had it in you.”

Her smile started to fade as she kept scrolling

“The chat logs are pretty wild.”

“Not gonna lie-I’m a little jealous.”
