A black sedan pulled up silently at the station entrance.

The door opened, and my grandpa Darren Brooks stepped out, leaning on his cane.

More than twenty men dressed in black followed behind him, their jackets bulging at the waist, their eyes sharp as knives.

The men who’d been violating Mom’s body didn’t even have time to react before rifle butts cracked against the backs of their heads.

They dropped one by one, blood seeping through their hair.

Grandpa didn’t even glance at them.

He walked up to me, crouched down, and wiped the blood and mud from my face. His hand was trembling.

“Chester, I’m so sorry I’m late.”

I opened my mouth, but no words came out.

Tears mixed with blood rolled down my face.

Grandpa took off his coat, draped it over me, and lifted me into his arms.

I curled up against him like a little kid.

“Let’s go.”

The convoy disappeared into the night.

Back at the house, Feodora was changing the dressing on Emerson’s forehead when her phone

rang.

“Ms. Wilde, we’ve got a major problem. The overseas companies pulled all their investments within half an hour. The banks are suddenly calling in their loans, and all our partners are terminating their contracts. The entire eight-hundred-million-dollar cash flow has been cut off.

“It looks like Darren is behind it…”

Her hand froze, and the cotton swab dropped to the floor.

“What did you say?”

“And… the Wildes’ house just called. They said Mr. Brooks has the house surrounded. He wants you to bring… bring Emerson back and make him beg Chester for forgiveness.”

Emerson’s face went pale. “Feodora, what’s going on?”

Feodora didn’t answer. Her phone slipped through her fingers, and she just stood there frozen.

She suddenly remembered that last look I had given her at the black market, right before they threw me into the leech pit.
