My Ungrateful Shifter Auctioned Me Away—Now He’s Begging for My Return Chapter 12

While I was away, Silas took care of Rowan temporarily for a few days.

The night before Rowan left, Silas video-called me.

For once, he complained to me.

“Rowan ate more than half of my meal packs.”

“Meal packs?” I asked in surprise.

Silas gritted his teeth.

“Yes. My meal packs. The ones Guardian made specially for me. He ate them while crying. I couldn’t

exactly wrestle them away from a weeping mess.’

“It’s fine,” I comforted him. “I’ll make new ones when I get home. I sourced some premium

whitefish for you.”

After I comforted him, Silas still looked wronged.

“Rowan also stole Guardian’s pajamas. He hugged them when he slept at night. I didn’t even get a

chance to take them back.”

I went silent.

When I finished my work and returned home, Rowan had already left.

He refused to leave with the doctor, but he was not allowed to stay either.

In the end, he could only register with the Shifter Registry Bureau as an unbonded stray and work

for them.

If he was lucky, someone else would take a chance on a pretty fox.

Beside the bed, near the alcove that used to be his favorite spot, I found his blanket.

It was a custom fleece blanket I had ordered months ago, featuring stylized illustrations of us.

Rowan had once hated it and always called it childish.

Yet somehow, when he went to Vivienne’s, he had taken that blanket with him. Even after

wandering outside, he had not lost it.

Now it had been washed clean, folded neatly, and left beside my bed.

I picked it up, and a note slipped out.

[I’m sorry.]

[But at least, please keep this blanket, Guardian. Please don’t forget me.]

A grinding sound suddenly came from beside me.

I turned and saw Silas wearing that same jaw set in that familiar, brooding jealousy again.

It made me laugh.

I shoved the blanket into his arms, then used my freed hands to rub his ears.

“All right, all right. You can do whatever you want with this blanket.”

“No more getting jealous over nonsense.”

Silas’s POV

When I was living as a stray, I could not maintain my human form.

I was hungry so often that I lived in the space between breaths.

But before death could come for me, Evelyn did.

She mistook me for a stray cat and rescued me.

She sent me to a clinic, and while I was being treated, she waited outside.

I watched her the entire time.

She was a beautiful human woman, tall and slender, with very fair skin and soft, delicate features.

Her dark hair was smooth and glossy, and behind her glasses, her eyes were always calm, as if nothing in the world mattered very much.

She did not hear the doctor say I was not a cat.

But she did hear him say I was suited to living in the wild, not in the city, and especially not as a

house pet.

So she drove me to the edge of the woods and gave me back my freedom.

A ring of wildflowers grew around her research facility.

I did not know what they were called, but they bloomed in every season, and their fragrance was

rich and sweet.

Every day, I crouched in those flowers and watched Evelyn.

She loved coming to the lab. Once she arrived, she stayed from morning until night.

I watched her in the morning, slept during the day, watched her again in the evening, and hunted by

moonlight.

After that stagnant peace stretched into weeks, I decided to crash into her on purpose and make her

notice me.

But from that day on, Evelyn did not come back to the lab for a very long time.

For someone who was so devoted to her research, what could have kept her away?

Had something happened to her?
