My Unfazed Mind Saves Me Chapter 07

My Unfazed Mind Saves Me Chapter 07

When I finished, Victor said nothing for a very long time.

He looked calm. He was not calm.

He knew I was oblivious. He just hadn’t realized the damage went this deep. He was genuinely starting to wonder if he shot someone in front of me right now, whether I’d ask who was directing.

Victor took a breath – the kind of breath that burned through every ounce of patience he’d ever stored in his

life and laid it out.

“First of all, nothing in that room was staged. It was real.”

I was his fiancée now. It was time for me to know.

“I was dealing with a traitor. That man on the floor wasn’t acting – he was actually begging for his life. And

what you touched? That wasn’t fake blood. It was real.”

My eyes went wide.

“When Stella pushed you through that door, my first instinct was to deal with you. You’d seen something you weren’t supposed to see. My only question was which one-way freighter to throw you on.”

I pulled the blanket up to my chin.

He laughed short, dry – and kept going.

“And the restaurant? Do you have any idea what pulling a knife on me means? You should be thanking that

thick skull of yours.”

“Anyone else would’ve been dead on the spot. Stella has been trying to get you killed from day one. Do you

get it now, you little fool?”

He flicked my forehead. “That sisterly bond you think you have? It’s all in your head. My guess? She’s been

trying to get rid of you since you came back to the Bennetts.”

“She just keeps failing because you’re somehow too dense to die. This time, she tried to use me to do it for

her.”

It finally sank in. I pulled the blanket over my head and curled into a ball.

Victor watched me disappear into the blanket and had no idea what to do. He’d never comforted anyone in

his life. So he did what he knew how to do.

“If you’re upset, I can have Stella brought back here. You can take it out on her yourself.”

“Or I can get you some new friends. Ones who won’t try to kill you. I’ll make sure of it.”

The door swung open.

“Victor! I’m here to see the patient. Is this my future sister-in-law?”

A girl bounced in – pigtails, puffy dress, the whole doll-like package. Victor blinked. “What are you doing

here?”

She pouted and made her voice sugary. “I missed you! The second my plane landed, I came straight here!”

Victor turned to me. “She’s the daughter of a family friend.”

Audrey Windsor planted her hands on her hips. “A family friend? Don’t make it sound so cold! We grew up

together!”

She turned to me, chin lifted. “Just so you know, sweetie – Victor and I go way back. We even used to share

a bed when we were kids. But that’s ancient history. You don’t mind… right?”

I poked my head out from the blanket.

“Oh, I don’t mind at all. That’s normal. I used to do the same thing.”

The orphanage had one big bed. When space got tight, boys and girls all piled in together.

Victor’s expression turned to stone.

“You shared a bed with boys? Who?”

I thought about it. There had been a lot of kids at the orphanage. And they rotated the sleeping spots every

few weeks.

So I told the truth.

“I can’t really remember. There were… a lot.”

Victor’s jaw tightened.
