My Unfazed Mind Saves Me Chapter 06

Victor studied the three of them, something close to surprise crossing his face. “Chloe went missing as a child, didn’t she? Only came back to the family recently. I assumed Stella would be the one you’d fight for.”

The three of them exchanged a look. “Of course we love Stella. She’s family too – how could we not care about her? It’s just… we never expected her to do something like this. Not tonight.”

Victor pressed. “You realize Stella might be the one who-”

My brother cut him off. “No. Not Stella. She’s been sweet her whole life she couldn’t do something like this. She spoke up at the engagement because she was scared you’d actually drink it. She was trying to

protect you, Mr. Sterling!”

My parents jumped in. “Those two have always been close. Why would Stella try to frame her own sister?”

Victor looked at the three of them for a long moment. Apparently, Chloe wasn’t the only oblivious one in the

family.

Victor didn’t call off the engagement. He told them the party was ruined, but they’d reschedule.

As far as he was concerned, I was already his. I’d be staying at the Sterling estate.

My family begged to take Stella home with them. After enough asking, Victor let her go.

None of them were leaving Bayridge anytime soon. And here, Stella couldn’t make a move without him

knowing about it.

It didn’t matter where she slept. What kept him up at night was the hacker – whoever had broken into the

Sterling system. Leaving someone like that in the shadows was a ticking bomb.

I woke up days later.

The first thing I saw was Victor’s face. He was leaning back in a chair beside my bed, eyes closed.

He looked rougher than the last time I’d seen him. Worn down.

“Victor…”

His eyes opened instantly sharp, alert. Like he hadn’t been sleeping at all.

“You’re awake? How do you feel?”

I shook my head. The last thing I remembered was the ballroom floor rushing up to meet me

“I didn’t know it was poison,” I blurted out. “I would never try to hurt you.”

He nodded. “I know.”

Then my chest tightened. “Where’s Stella?”

Relief flickered across Victor’s face. He thought I’d finally figured it out.

“So you know the-”

“Someone tricked her! That wasn’t simple syrup – someone swapped it. You have to find whoever did this to her before they come after you again! Oh god – if their plan failed, what if they go after Stella next…”

Victor stared at me. His mouth opened, then shut again.

“Chloe. Could you possibly be more oblivious?”

I just looked at him.

Victor didn’t sugarcoat it. “Stella is the one trying to hurt you. And she’s not working alone.”

I blinked. “Why?”

Victor looked like he was losing the will to live. “What do you mean, why?”

“Why would she want to hurt me? We’ve always gotten along great. She’s constantly looking out for me. Like

that first audition – the dark room?”

“She was worried I’d chicken out, so she pushed me right in. That’s the only reason I got my shot. And the restaurant – the second audition? She went out of her way to get me that switchblade. A real prop!”

“I wouldn’t have nailed that scene without it. And tonight she told me you have a sweet tooth and you like

syrup in your drinks, so she got some for me to add. She had no idea someone switched it out. That’s not

her fault.”

The more I talked, the more it all made sense in my head. Stella was being framed. I was sure of it.

I frowned at him. “Victor, you shouldn’t go around accusing people when you don’t know the full story.”
