My Superpower Was Hearing Lies And My Weakness Was Believing Him Chapter 07

I nodded at the painting. “That’s really beautiful.”

The boy in the wheelchair smiled shyly. “Thank you, Ms. Hart.”

I straightened up and turned. Nathan was standing at the door.

He looked like a different person, leaner, sharper, as if he’d aged ten years in three months. He stared at me as if I were a ghost he’d never expected to see again.

I closed the classroom door and walked into the hallway.

He followed, his steps hurried at first, then stopping abruptly just behind me.

“Emily,” he said, his voice raw. “I looked everywhere for you. I’m sorry.”

I said nothing. I just nodded. “Is there something else?”

His eyes dimmed. I saw regret and longing flicker in his eyes.

“Emily, I never loved Vanessa. I only love you. The baby… it was because…”

He trailed off, struggling. When I turned to leave, he blurted it out.

“I found out years ago that I have a low sperm count. I wanted a child so badly, and I thought, if Vanessa had the baby, we could raise it together.”

He stared at me like a man awaiting judgment.

I looked down, then spoke quietly. “Nathan, do you know when I first realized you were lying?”

He froze.

“Before our eighth anniversary, I had that accident. I didn’t get hurt, but I got something else. Every time you lied, I heard a bell ring in my head.”

“On our anniversary, you wanted to be with Vanessa. The cinnamon rolls, the chicken stew, and so many other things…”

“That bell rang over and over in my head, until I didn’t even have a chance to make excuses for you anymore.”

His face went pale, inch by inch.

“You said you’d cut her off, again and again. But all you really did was cut me off from you.”

“I truly don’t love you anymore, Nathan.”

He opened his mouth, but no words came.

Then he remembered, the bell that rang in his own head right before the surgery. That was the moment she had given up on him.

“Emily,” he said, his voice shattering. “Give me one more chance. I was so stupid. I thought I could control everything, and I lost you in the process. Let me make it right.”

I shook my head. “Nathan, listen. Right now, I can’t hear anything.”

He went rigid.

“Everything you just said, there was no bell. But it doesn’t matter. I don’t care if you’re lying or telling the truth. Because I realized something: I genuinely don’t love you anymore.”

“No!” He grabbed my wrist, eyes bloodshot. “Don’t leave me, Emily. I don’t want anything else. Just you.”

I looked at him with a calm, sad smile. “There’s no going back.”

“If it were the old me, the one who loved you more than I loved any dream of a child, I might have found a way. But even that version of me could never accept betrayal.”

“Emily…” His voice trembled. “We had twenty years. You can’t just throw that away.”

For the first time, I let some emotion slip. “Nathan, did you ever stop to think what you asked me to give up? I would have spent the rest of my life as an invalid. I couldn’t even lift a cup.”

“If I said I forgive you now—”

He looked up, hope flickering across his face.

[Ding.]

The bell rang in his head.

His hope died instantly.

“I didn’t know…” He closed his eyes, as if the pain had reached its peak. “Emily, I didn’t know. I’m sorry.”
