My Son Told Me I Was Too Ugly And Stupid Compared To Her Chapter 08

There was no going back for them now.

Charles looked at me, eyes full of desperate hope. “Emily… are you satisfied now? If not, I’ll kneel in

front of you.”

I stopped talking to him. I discharged myself from the hospital.

Charles followed, his eyes red, his voice small. “Emily, please. Let’s pretend none of this happened.

I love you.”

“I’ll meet you at the courthouse this afternoon.”

“No. I won’t sign.”

“Then I’ll file.”

I got into the car. In the rearview mirror, I saw father and son standing there, lost.

Charles dropped to his haunches, his shoulders shaking. Jacob lingered nearby, unsure what to do,

then began to cry as well.

I felt nothing at all.

That afternoon, Charles didn’t show up. I hired a lawyer and filed for divorce. Thanks to Jessica’s leak, I had no trouble getting proof of the affair.

Charles dragged Jessica to the clinic, but she refused to have the abortion.

She clawed at him, screaming. “If I lose this baby, I’ll stand outside your office and tell everyone

what kind of man you really are.”

Something inside Charles snapped. He slapped her to the ground. Then he kicked her.

A shriek. Jessica lost the baby.

None of that mattered to me.

The divorce was granted after the second hearing. I breathed a sigh of relief.

Charles looked ashen. He had no more options left, no matter how much he fought.

At the courthouse, Jacob ran to me. His eyes were swollen from crying.

He wrapped his arms around my legs. “Mom, please don’t divorce Dad. I’m sorry. I won’t be bad anymore. I’ll be good. I promise.”

Only now did he understand what divorce meant.

A family torn apart. Parents moving on with their lives. His place as the link between us would be

gone.

But it was too late.

I looked down at him. Tired. I gently pushed him away without a word.

I turned to Charles. He understood what that meant. His eyes dimmed.

We walked into the courthouse and came out with divorce papers in hand.

“Emily, I split the assets like you asked. I only have one request.”

“Come see Jacob once a month. That’s not too much to ask, is it?”

His voice was bitter, empty.

I nodded. “That’s fine.”

I didn’t look at either of them again.

I got into my car and drove away, rolling the windows down to let the wind rush in.

I held

up

the divorce decree, and for the first time in a long while, I smiled, truly smiled.
