I woke up the next afternoon.

Though the articles had been taken down, traces of them were still easy to find.

Charles tried desperately to take my phone. “Emily, don’t look at that. It’s all lies. Just rest. I’ll

handle everything.”

“Let’s get a divorce.”

His phone slipped from his hand and hit the floor.

He had always been the one to want the divorce. I had always been the one begging, avoiding,

pleading.

There was nothing left in my gaze. All I wanted was to get out of this.

I said it again. “Charles, let’s get a divorce.”

“No. I won’t divorce you.”

I didn’t understand. “From the moment you set me up, there was never any chance for us.”

Charles went pale. He stammered, “You know?”

My face was tired. “You think I’m stupid? I knew the moment you handed me that document what

you were sacrificing.”

“I just didn’t know you could be so ruthless. You used me to build your company, then discarded me

when I became a stain on your reputation.”

He grabbed my hands. “No. That’s not what happened. No.”

We both knew the truth.

“You keep half the assets. Jacob stays with you. I don’t want visitation. I’ll take the house on the

west side. You can handle the rest.” I listed the terms calmly.

Tears ran down Charles’s face. “I love you, Emily.”

I looked down at my stomach and smiled bitterly. “What has your love ever given me?”

“Give me another chance. I’ll break up with Jessica. I won’t take the baby.”

I shook my head. “That has nothing to do with me.”

Charles was struggling to breathe.

The door clicked. Jacob stood there. “Dad, why did you call me? Mom’s fine, isn’t she? Is she acting crazy again?”

Charles grabbed him and made him apologize face to face. “Apologize to your mother. Now.”

Jacob looked up, eyes red. Stubborn. “I don’t have anything to apologize for. She doesn’t deserve any of this.”

His voice rang out, sharp and cruel. Charles’s temples pounded.

He had failed this child, no, worse, he had warped him. Jacob was only repeating what he had learned from watching his father.

“She’s a psycho. She nags, she’s annoying. Dad, why are you making me apologize? Just divorce

her. I support-”

A hard slap sent Jacob to the floor. Charles grabbed his arm. “She is your mother. You do not talk to

her like that. Apologize. Now.”

Trembling, Jacob looked from his father to me. Then he burst into tears.

He was scared. His father had never treated him like this before. “I’m sorry, Mom. I’m sorry. I was

wrong.”

I watched the performance dispassionately. It meant nothing.
