My Sister’s Forbidden Love For My Fiancé Chapter 06

His phone rang.

The assistant’s name flashed on the screen. He picked up. Whatever came through on the other end, his entire body went rigid like he’d been hit by a live wire.

His pupils contracted. His grip on the phone tightened until his knuckles went white, as if he was trying to crush the device in his palm.

“…Paris?” The two syllables came out hoarse, barely a whisper.

The second the call ended, he turned and walked, no, ran. Leather soles cracked against the marble floor, faster and faster, fading into the distance.

“Edmund!”

Sadie screamed after him. The first cry was shrill as a bird with a broken wing.

“Edmund, stop!”

The second shattered. Something inside her chest had cracked.

“Edmund-!”

The third was no longer a word. Just a broken sob, echoing alone down that hollow corridor.

He didn’t stop. Not a single step. He didn’t even glance back.

Sadie collapsed to her knees, her white gown pooling around her on the floor.

She buried her face in her hands, tears streaming down her cheeks, her shoulders heaving violently.

Edmund dove into the black sedan in the parking lot. Ignition. Gear. Floor it.

Tires screeched against pavement. The car shot onto the road, exhaust kicking up dry leaves behind it.

His hands gripped the wheel. The only thing in his head was his assistant’s last sentence, looping on repeat. “Mr. Shaw, we found it. Rowena Winslow booked a one-way flight to Paris. Departed 7 a.m.

One-way.”

Those two words drove into his chest like twin blades.

On the passenger seat sat the bouquet he’d picked that morning, white roses with eucalyptus. She’d once said she loved the crisp, understated combination.

He grabbed it, ready to hurl it out the window, but his fingers clenched around the stems mid-swing.

Thorns bit into his palm. Blood beaded from the wounds. He didn’t feel a thing.

His mind kept flashing back to last night-Rowena leaning against the toilet rim, sour bile still on her lips, looking up at him with that question.

“Edmund. Did you ever love me?”

What had he said?

He’d said he was sorry, that it was his fault, that they’d go see the northern lights, then the Arctic.

A beautiful, poisonous lie wrapped in sugar and she’d swallowed it whole, smiled at him, nodded.

She knew everything. She’d known all along.

And today he’d torn the wedding venue apart looking for her, hollowed out like a puppet with nothing

inside.

Edmund slammed the brakes.

Tires dragged two black scars across the empty road. His body lurched forward then crashed back into the

seat.

Paris.

She’d gone to Paris.

She’d left him.

The realization hit like a bucket of ice water, numbing every joint in his body.

He sat in the car for God knows how long.

His phone kept buzzing. Sadie’s name flashing again and again. He didn’t answer.

Then a voice message came in. He opened it without thinking. Sadie’s voice poured through the speaker,

thick with tears, broken and breathless, like she was running even as she spoke.

“Edmund, please pick up… Rowena’s gone… I don’t care about anything anymore… just come back… please come back… look at me… just once…”

He didn’t finish it.

His thumb swiped left. Deleted.

Then he restarted the engine, turned the car around, and headed for the airport.
