My Sister Couldn’t Tame Her Alpha? Fine. I’ll Do It! Chapter 04

He didn’t answer that.

Turned around, grabbed my jacket off the chair, and held it out.

“I owe her parents my life, Thera.” His voice was flat. “Back then, they blocked the retreat for me. Her dad took a blade meant for me. Her mom went back to find his body and never came out.”

His knuckles were white around my jacket.

“Her daughter just left a suicide note. I can’t pretend I didn’t see it. Just-not tonight, okay.”

Shit. I couldn’t argue with that.

He held the jacket out, didn’t move.

“But I’m not going alone. Wherever I go tonight, you’re coming. When it’s done, you decide what happens next.”

I yanked the jacket out of his hand, shoved my arms through squeezed past him, and pushed the door open.

“Then let’s go. Don’t let Miss Silverveil Falls turn our wedding night into her one-woman show.”

Dark out. Halfway down the trail, his hand found mine. Locked around my fingers. Tight.

I tried to pull away. Didn’t budge.

“Thera.” His thumb pressed against my pulse. “Your heartbeat’s all over the place.”

“That’s called pissed off.”

“…Right.”

He didn’t let go.

By the time we got to the main clearing, the search was already on. Wolves scattered in every direction, shouting Auriel’s name into the pitch black. Someone handed Corvax he note she left.

[I don’t want to be a burden anymore. I’m going to the falls find my parents.]

Corvax flipped straight into command mode. Split into groups, marked off zones, sent people down the main road to Silverveil. Guy who couldn’t talk about his own feelings had zero problem barking search coordinates at thirty wolves.

Everyone headed for the main road. I didn’t follow.

If she really wanted to jump, she wouldn’t leave a note telling everyone exactly where to find her. This wasn’t suicide. This was a stage.

I turned onto the narrow ridge path on the east side. Looped around to the back trail behind the falls-grass tall as a person, barely even a path. Nobody else would take this route.

I found her on a ledge jutting out over the drop. Arms crossed. Standing perfectly still.

She heard footsteps and turned. Her face lit up first-then she saw it was me, and it fell.

“Where’s Corvax?”

“Running the search. Half the pack’s out here in the dark screaming your name.” I leaned against a tree. “You, though? Sitting here with your hair perfect and your eyes not even puffy. Doesn’t really scream suicidal.”

That layer on her face cracked for a second. “You don’t know what I’ve been through.”

“I do. You didn’t get what you wanted, so you’re making everyone else miserable until they give in.”

Last time, Avelina lived forty years of this-crying, guilt trips stealing the spotlight at every important moment.

I crossed my arms. “But that only works on people who feel guilty. And I don’t.”

Her eyes went cold.

“I grew up with Corvax. My family died for him.” She stepped closer. “Before you barged in, I was his Luna!”

“If he really wanted you, I couldn’t have barged in.” I stared at her. “The contract was signed before either of us was born. You were never in the running.”

“You think you’re better than me? An outsider from the east. No status, no bloodline, no connections.” She smiled, but her eyes were empty. “A piece of paper makes you think you’re his Luna? You’ll never replace what I mean to

him.”

“You’re right. The contract doesn’t mean anything.” I pushed off the tree. “But what are you to him? Dead weight. Baggage he can’t shake. That’s not love, babe. That’s a hostage situation.”

I turned to leave. She was fine. Standing on solid rock, never planned to jump. The river roared below. I still had other things to do tonight.

She grabbed my arm from behind. Voice dropped low.

“You think you know everything. So-”

She leaned into my ear.

“If we both fall right now, whose name do you think he screams first?”

Before I could open my mouth, both her hands slammed into my back.

My feet hit nothing. Wind rushed into my ears. The sound of the river swallowed everything.

Above me, Auriel screamed:

“Corvax! Help! She pulled me down with her!”
