The second Dad saw me, he put on his usual head-of-the-family look.

“Sable, you’ve gotten pretty bold.”

“You got married behind our backs and never even called. Do you have any respect for us?”

Mom’s eyes were red as she spoke.

“Sable, you ran all the way out here without saying a word. Did you ever think about how worried

we’d be?”

Brennan looked just as disapproving.

“You married some random guy just to get back at us. Sable, have you lost your mind?”

“Are you done?”

I looked at them calmly.

“You were the ones who went to the family records and had me removed.”

“According to the rules, we haven’t been family for a long time. So what gives you the right to

lecture me now?”

They were all left speechless.

Dad’s face went pale.

“No matter what, you’re still my daughter!”

Brennan stood his ground.

“Sable, that’s not how it was. Taking you off the family recordswas temporary. We just wanted you to marry Blaise sooner.”

“Exactly. You were going to be off it sooner or later anyway,” Mom added.

“You did that to Maris. You owed her.”

“But we never meant to treat you unfair.”

How ridiculous.

“You never meant to treat me unfair? You just took Maris’s side every single time.”

“Ever since we were kids, you made me give in to her. In the end, I spent three years being played.”

“You said I was your daughter, but you never trusted me. When I needed you, you chose Maris. Every time.”

“You already chose her. So stop coming after me.”

I only wanted to set the record straight.

“Don’t come back. I don’t need any of you.”

Before he left, Brennan stared at me.

“You really didn’t do it back then?”

“Ask yourself.”

I turned and walked away without another word.

Later, I heard Brennan returned to Hollow Creek and started digging into what had happened back

then.

He found out Maris staged the whole thing. She did it to drive me away and take everything I had.

Even the affordable housing lottery slot was a lie.

When Blaise, who had already hit rock bottom, found out the truth, he stormed into the house and

nearly strangled Maris.

After they pulled her off, Maris still acted like she’d done nothing wrong.

“You chose to believe me. And now you’re blaming me? Isn’t that rich?”

Once the whole town found out, they ran Maris out of Hollow Creek. She went back to the city in disgrace.

Without anyone left to rely on, her life quickly fell apart. Eventually, she gave up on herself.

Mom and Dad got sick too.

Brennan didn’t come looking for me again for a long time.

Blaise was a wreck. He couldn’t take the gossip about him and Maris, so he left Hollow Creek one

night.

I never kept up with him.

Six months later, Callum and I had our baby.

Callum’s parents were over the moon. They threw a big party.

On the day my postpartum recovery ended, I got a package from back home.

Inside were baby clothes Mom had made by hand.

After the truth about Maris came out, Mom and Dad were too ashamed to face me. They stopped coming.

But they couldn’t shake the guilt. They missed me. Every now and then, they still sent me things.

I never refused them. I just put everything away.

Some wounds don’t heal just because time passes.

From then on, all I wanted was to live my own life and be happy.
