The floating comments were still arguing noisily in front of my eyes.

“Why is he acting shocked? He’s literally the reason his daughter got hurt in the first place.”

“And now he’s blaming Vanessa like he didn’t know about the wedding money? Please”

“To be fair, Ethan looked stable on paper. Doctor, good income, respectable career. Robert probably really thought he was helping Annie.”

“No, Vanessa TOLD him that. You’re telling me this grown man never once asked his own daughter what she wanted?”

“Exactly. At the end of the day, he wanted money and a good son-in-law. He just didn’t expect everything to blow up in his face.”

“Annie really is heartbreaking though. Her mom died early and her dad completely failed her.”

“The deepest wounds always come from family.”

By the time we left the precinct, Lucien had already called for a car.

He opened the passenger door for me quietly.

The moment I sat inside the enclosed silence of the car, all the emotions I’d been suppressing finally collapsed.

I covered my face and started crying.

Not pretty crying either.

The kind that hurt.

Like somebody had hollowed out my chest from the inside.

Lucien immediately panicked.

“Annic?”

His voice sounded completely helpless.

He looked around frantically like he genuinely didn’t know what to do.

Then finally-

He shifted partially back into his incubus form and carefully placed his tail into my hands.

“Here.”

His voice softened awkwardly.

“You said earlier that you liked touching it.”

I stared at him through blurry eyes.

Lucien looked unbelievably nervous.

“Don’t cry anymore,” he whispered.

None of this was your fault.”

“Your father was wrong.”

“You’re a really good person, Annie.”

His crimson eyes looked painfully sincere.

“I’ll stay with you.”

“I can be your family instead.”

“I’ll always stay by your side. I promise.”

For an incubus, he was terrible at sweet talk.

Clumsy.

Honest.

Almost desperate.

Like he’d willingly give me anything in the world if it meant I stopped crying.

Something inside my chest softened completely.

Without thinking. I tightened my grip around his tail.

Lucien immediately sucked in a breath.

The muscles in his jaw tightened hard.

I stared at him for a moment.

Then slowly reached up and brushed my fingers across one of his exposed fangs.

“Really?”

“You’ll stay beside me forever?”

“Really.” Lucien breathed instantly. “I swea-”

Before he could finish speaking, I pushed my fingers lightly into his mouth.

Warm.

Wet.

Soft

Lucien’s entire body locked up.

The expression on his face nearly destroyed me

Trying so hard to stay controlled.

Trying so hard not to scare me.

And failing miserably.

I leaned closer until my forehead nearly touched his.

“You said it yourself.” I whispered softly.

“You’re staying with me forever.

My fingers slid slowly along his lower lip.

“If you break your promise..

A small smile tugged at my mouth.

“I might actually kill you.”

Lucien inhaled sharply.

His eyes looked damp now.

Completely fixed on me.

Annie,” he said hoarsely. “I would never leave you.”

Then quieter-

And honestly…”

“If it were you, I wouldn’t mind dying at all.”

My heartbeat stuttered violently.

Unable to stop myself anymore, I finally kissed him properly.

The lips I’d been secretly thinking about for weeks were even better than I imagined.

Lucien trembled beneath me.

Not from fear.

From restraint.

Like every instinct inside him was screaming to lose control.

But he was still holding himself back for me.

That realization made heat curl low in my stomach.

So I slowly climbed into his lap and leaned against his chest deliberately.

Then whispered beside his ear-

“The thing Vanessa interrupted earlier…”

Lucien visibly stiffened underneath me.

I smiled slightly.

That single sentence shattered the last thread of control he had left.

The massive black tail behind him immediately curled around us both like a protective cocoon.

Inside the darkness of it, Lucien looked up at me with burning crimson eyes.

Then gently guided my hand onto his chest.

Hard muscle flexed beneath my palm.

“Annie,” he asked quietly, voice rough with desire, “don’t you like touching me?”

“Do you want to keep going?”

The floating comments absolutely lost their minds.

“I DON’T EVEN CARE THIS IS PEAK ROMANCE NOW.”

“THEY’RE SO INSANE ABOUT EACH OTHER I’M OBSESSED.”

“After all that suffering we FINALLY got the payoff scene. Everybody cheer.”

“Okay place your bets right now. How long is Lucien lasting his first time with the girl he’s been obsessed with for three years?”
