My Secret Guardian Is an Incubus Chapter 03

My Secret Guardian Is an Incubus Chapter 03 The Secret Guardian
I stopped walking and glanced back over my shoulder.
Lucien was still standing behind the register, watching me leave.
Expressionless.
Beautiful in the same cold, distant way as always.
There was absolutely nothing on his face that suggested the obsessive devotion the comments kept talking about.
And honestly, other than a few accidental late-night encounters around the neighborhood, we barely even knew each other.
So how exactly had he fallen in love with me?
The more I thought about it, the more my head hurt.
Eventually I gave up and went home to sleep instead.
When I woke up, my phone buzzed with a flood of messages from Vanessa.
“Seriously, Annie Walker? You hung up on me?”
“Listen carefully. Ethan finally came to his senses and realized you’re the one he truly wants. Don’t throw this chance away out of pride.”
“You two grew up together. You dated all through high school and college. I refuse to believe you don’t have feelings for him. Besides, he’s my nephew. I know he’s nice kid.”
“I know you’re still upset he left you for Chloe Hart, but he admitted he was young and stupid back then. They already broke up. Ethan said himself he’s never stopped loving you.”
“And don’t forget how much he’s helped your father lately while your dad’s been sick. Think carefully before making another impulsive decision.”
By the end of the conversation, Vanessa had pulled out her ultimate weapon.
Ethan was a doctor.
Over the past few months, my dad had been in and out of hospitals constantly, and Ethan had genuinely helped a lot.
Back then, we really had been together for years.
First love.
First heartbreak.
The whole cliché.
But apparently childhood sweethearts still lost to the excitement of somebody new.
Junior year of college, Ethan suddenly became obsessed with Chloe Hart—the gorgeous rich girl from the architecture department.
After that, he chased her like he’d lost his damn mind.
When graduation came around, he even took the money I’d saved for rent and followed her overseas.
That was how we ended things.
And now, after all this time, he suddenly came back to Blackwater City, got a new hospital job, and started sucking up to my father again.
The floating comments drifted lazily across my vision.
“Okay but Annie and Ethan really WERE sweet back in the day. First loves hit different.”
“Sweet my ass. Ethan cheated with Chloe and publicly humiliated Annie. Didn’t he literally say she wasn’t worth a single strand of Chloe’s hair?”
“Exactly. That man is trash. He isn’t coming back because he loves her. He just realized Annie’s successful now. Even when they dated, he bought her cheap garbage gifts and had the nerve to call it romance.”
“If Annie actually takes him back, then honestly she doesn’t deserve Lucien. Three years of silent devotion and she still has no idea this man follows her every night to make sure she gets home safe.”
“RIGHT? He’s chased creeps away from her more times than she knows.”
“Incubi are so funny. Constantly horny, but emotionally they’re just giant pathetic romantics.”
I stared at the comments in silence. Then slowly looked toward my apartment window.
For the past three years, I had lived peacefully here. No harassment. No drunk men following me home at night. No creepy incidents.
At first, I thought I’d simply gotten lucky. Now I suddenly wondered—Had Lucien been protecting me this whole time?
The thought made something tighten in my chest, strangely.
