My Poor Online Boyfriend Pulled Up in a Rolls Royce Chapter 03

I decided to numb myself with work.

Three months later, I was successfully promoted to project supervisor.

Not because the company had lost its mind.

Not because I was capable.

Our department had only three people. Two quit, and I was the only one left.

The workload was heavier than a mountain. My boss practically begged me into his office.

“Claire, I knew from one look that you were smart and talented…”

And just like that, my title went up.

My salary did not.

Wonderful. Civilization marches on, apparently.

At the Monday meeting, the director slapped the table and announced good news.

“The project our company has been chasing for six months finally has progress. This time, we must show our strength and win this major account in one go!”

The whole company cheered.

Only I was still trapped in thoughts of that $800 million.

“Claire,” the director said, looking at me, “the project you handled before was similar to this one. Come with me to the meeting this afternoon and take notes beside me.”

“Oh, okay,” I answered absentmindedly.

Only when I sat down in the conference room and stared at the suited man in front of me did I snap back to myself.

This man…

So handsome.

Exactly my type.

Wait.

Aaaaaah!

A sharp scream exploded inside my head.

Wasn’t this my newly dumped ex-boyfriend with $800 million?

My scalp went numb, and my whole body stiffened.

I lowered my head and pretended to flip through the documents.

“Claire?”

The director called my name, and the pen in my hand fell to the floor.

I bent to pick it up, and my gaze happened to land on Crystal Lake’s dress shoes.

Designer.

Shiny.

Rich at one glance.

I straightened up and met a pair of eyes that changed from shock and awkwardness to a half-smile in seconds.

It was over.

He had recognized me.

My scalp tingled. I lowered my head again and pretended to read the documents.

The A4 papers in my hands rustled loudly.

The director leaned toward me and lowered his voice. “Why are you shaking?”

I failed to hold it in and forgot to control my volume.

“I got a little excited seeing a handsome guy.”

In an instant, the air became absurdly quiet.

Crystal’s face visibly stiffened, then flushed.

He picked up his teacup, took a sip, set it down, then took another sip.

His throat moved, and the tips of his ears turned slightly red.

He even raised a hand to tug at his tie.

The director’s eyes burned with fury, but he had no choice but to smile and smooth things over.

“Mr. Lake, this is our project supervisor, Claire Sterling. Young people can be thoughtless. If she offended you, I apologize on her behalf.”

I cooperated with a smile that said, Look how sensible I am.

Crystal set down his cup. His light, thoughtful gaze swept over me, and his lips curved.

Then he said meaningfully, “It’s fine. I understand.”

What exactly did he understand?

That was the only thought left in my mind.

He said slowly, “Young people’s thoughts can indeed be surprising.”

My smile froze.

He was absolutely mocking me.

The director wiped sweat from his forehead and laughed along.

“Yes, young people these days… certain young people do have rather unpredictable minds…”

When Crystal said nothing, the director quickly threw me under the bus.

“Claire is usually very serious at work. She just gets excited when she sees a handsome man.”

After a pause, he added, “But not many men can make her lose composure like this. Last time, when a handsome intern joined the company, she didn’t even look at him. I thought her personality had changed. Then she said, ‘Handsome? I thought he was average.’”

When had I ever said that?

Crystal still looked calm, but his eyes sharpened when he looked at me.

“Is that so? Then I wonder, from beginning to end, how many men have ever caught Miss Sterling’s eye?”

A cold wind seemed to blow across my back, and I shivered hard.

The director was speechless.

I didn’t dare answer either.

Crystal, however, continued analyzing on his own.

“Does she often call handsome men ‘baby’ and talk about things that shouldn’t be exposed?”

My face instantly turned bright red.

I thought of the things I had sent during those three months of online dating.

Things that could never be shown in public.

“Baby, I miss you. Do you want to come into my arms?”

“Baby, did you wear the matching couple outfit I bought for you? Take a picture and send it to me. I’m looking forward to it.”

At that thought, I didn’t dare go any further.

If there had been a hole in the floor, I would have crawled into it without hesitation.
