My Mother Cut Me Apart For My Sister Chapter 08

My Mother Cut Me Apart For My Sister Chapter 08

Another half hour passed in the interrogation room. Chloe

didn’t crack – not once. She denied everything with the composure of someone who’d rehearsed for this.

Then the door opened, and the officers brought someone in.

Chloe went rigid. Richard Sterling–the director of her charity

foundation.

The officer turned to her. “You didn’t wire the money to Victor directly. But you sure love your charity work, don’t you?”

Chloe didn’t blink. “Officer, last I checked, donating to charity

isn’t a crime.”

“But laundering a hitman’s fee through one is.” The officer’s gaze shifted. “And Richard – helping cover up a felony makes

you an accessory.”

Before Chloe could speak, Richard folded. He collapsed forward

in his chair, hands shaking.

“I’ll talk. I’ll tell you everything.”

“Chloe came to me and said she wanted to make a

six–million–dollar donation. But five million of it was

supposed to be quietly rerouted–off the books. The other million was my cut.” His voice cracked. “And I said yes.”

“I know I’m in trouble. Please – just tell me this doesn’t put

me on the hook for murder.”

Chloe’s stare could’ve cut glass.

When the interrogation room door opened, Mom was already

pacing outside. The second she saw Chloe, she rushed forward.

“Chloe, honey – are you okay? I told them there’s no way you were involved. I’ve been worried sick.”

I watched Mom’s face – all that desperate tenderness – and my vision blurred. She’d never once looked at me that way.

Mom reached for Chloe’s arm, ready to take her home. The officer stepped between them.

“Richard gave us everything, and Chloe just folded. She hired

the hitman. All of it is true.”

“She hired Victor to abduct your eldest daughter. Afterward, she drugged you–put something in your drink to cloud your

awareness—and used you to dismember the body while you

were too far gone to understand what you were cutting.”

“It’s over, Dr. Hayes.”

Mom’s voice broke before she could stop it. “That’s

impossible! I — I can’t explain the fingerprints, I know that,

–

but I did NOT dismember anyone. I know what I’ve done and

what I haven’t!”

“And Chloe she can’t even watch a horror movie without

–

covering her eyes. She doesn’t have it in her to kill someone!”

“You’ve made a mistake!”

The officer held her gaze. “You didn’t dismember a body. But do you remember butchering a deer?”

Mom’s mouth opened. Then closed. Something shifted behind

her eyes.

“I… yes. There was one night–Chloe said she’d gotten a freshly hunted deer from a friend but didn’t know how to

process it. She asked me to come handle it.” Mom blinked. “Why? What does that have to do with anything?”

The officer looked at her for a long moment. He took a breath.

“Dr. Hayes… that wasn’t a deer.”

Every muscle in Mom’s body locked up. “What?”

“Chloe has admitted to slipping a sedative into your tea that night. A sedative–strong enough to put you into a fugue state. You couldn’t tell what was right in front of you. Your hands just… did what they’d been trained to do.”

Mom’s gaze swung to Chloe, then down to her own hands. The

sound that came out of her was barely human.

“Did I… did I really… my daughter… my baby…”
