“Hailey Brooks, what kind of stunt are you pulling?!” She stormed in and tore down every grim white drape and photo she could grab. “Tyler isn’t dead! What is wrong with you?!”

One tear was still clinging to my lashes. I gaped at her. “W-What are you saying?”

“Tyler isn’t dead, you idiot!”

Oh, she still had no idea this whole thing was live. Every word, every move-recorded/The only reason she’d shown up so fast was because I’d had Gavin tip her off.

“Lila, I know you and Tyler are close, but you don’t have to lie to make me feel better. It’s been over a month. I’m prepared for the worst.” I cried harder.

The live viewer count kept climbing. The chat was going feral.

“He was with me just this morning, alive and fine!”

The room went dead quiet. Every person stared at her like she’d grown a second head.

I forced out a weak smile. “Lila, that’s not something to joke about…”

“You don’t believe me? Look.” Lila flashed her phone. A selfie of Tyler getting her breakfast this

morning. She was in a silk nightgown, their bodies squeezed together in the frame.

“Let me be real with you, Hailey. The only reason he faked his disappearance is you.” She crossed

her arms and looked down at me. “You were suffocating him, and he couldn’t shake you, so he had

to hide. That’s it.”

Every drop of color drained from my face. I could barely stand-someone had to hold me up.

“So he couldn’t even be bothered to break up with me? He just went straight to mind games and emotional abuse?!”

“Don’t blame him. This is on you. Your family’s working class, right? What made you think you deserved him? He was gonna dump you regardless.”

Right on cue. This was the moment.

I steadied myself. “Lila, what exactly is your relationship with him?”

“Friends. Childhood friends.”

I tilted my head, looking confused. “You sure? Because as his girlfriend, I knew nothing about what was going on. But you… Are you two really just friends?”
