My Missing Boyfriend Was Alive, So I Chose His Best Friend Chapter 07

Just like I expected, Tyler couldn’t let it go. He came in person. At one in the morning, he slipped

into my apartment.

The place was a rental, but his fingerprint still unlocked the door. I lay in bed, breathing deep and

steady, completely out. The sheets were crisp, no trace of any guy’s stuff. On my nightstand sat a crumpled tissue and our photo.

Tyler let out a breath of relief. He didn’t know I was faking sleep, or that the security camera on my

desk was capturing every move. If he so much as laid a finger on me, Gavin was watching the feed

from the parking garage, ready to storm up.

Tyler’s doubts faded and he left. Then he met up with Gavin at a 7-Eleven.

“Sorry, man. I was tripping earlier,” Tyler said.

“It’s fine.”

“Where’s your girl?”

“Tired. Didn’t want to come out.”

“Her voice seriously sounded just like Hailey. You gotta let me meet her next time.”

Gavin didn’t confirm or deny.

Tyler looked haggard. “Gavin, you think maybe I should just end this?”

“Why’s that?”

“I can’t sleep lately.” He took a swig, nose and eyes going red.

“Before, with Hailey, I was always bitching that she was too controlling. Now I’ve got all this freedom and nothing feels right.”

“I’ve been lying awake for nights. I heard she hasn’t even asked about me this whole week. I’m scared the whole thing’s gonna blow up in my face.”

Gavin played it calm. “Don’t sweat it. She hasn’t given up on you. She was literally about to file a missing person report.”

“She can’t file a report! If she does, the whole thing falls apart.”

“I know. I stopped her. She’s been a little under the weather this week, so it didn’t happen.”

“Is she okay?”

“Just a cold. Nothing serious.”

Tyler sighed. “I regret this. I put her through hell…”

“Don’t talk like that.” Gavin’s voice stayed even. “Think about all those nights she wouldn’t let you/ go out drinking, the fights she picked over Lila. This time, she’ll finally learn to fall in line.”

“So I should…”

“Listen to Lila and string it out a little longer.”

After Tyler left, Gavin pulled his phone from the chest pocket of his jacket. “So?” he asked, nervous.

“Perfect. Exactly what I told you to do.” I watched the video footage and let my lips curl. “Come

back. I’ll give you a reward.”
