Gavin snapped out of the lust instantly. He yanked the volume down, his voice flattening out. “Just some girl you don’t know.”

“But she sounded exactly like Hailey.”

“You’re hearing things. I’m hanging up. Don’t bother me.”

He cut the call and rolled me beneath him, voice dipping back into something indulgent. “Let’s

keep going. I’ll be very focused now.”

“Don’t bother. Aren’t you scared Tyler’s gonna come charging over here any second?”

He stilled.

I went on. “He’s probably hiding out in that house on the edge of town, right? It’s only a thirty-minute drive.”

“You… heard all that?”

“Full disclosure-I’ve even seen him in person.”

Gavin’s expression tangled into something complicated. He took a long beat to absorb it.

“So you’ve known this whole time he wasn’t really missing.”

“Yeah.”

“You’re not angry?”

“I was. Then I got over it fast. Getting angry at someone like that is just bad for my mental health.” The day I’d run into Tyler, I didn’t storm up and confront him. I didn’t scream, didn’t demand to know why he’d deceived me.

He’d already shown me exactly how rotten he was. You don’t go digging through trash expecting

treasure.

I looked at Gavin. “What about you? Got anything to say?”

He was the only one in that group who’d ever spoken against the fake-disappearance plan. I really wanted to know what made him go along with it.

“I owed him a favor.” It was like Gavin dropped a weight he’d been dragging forever. He held

nothing back. “Tyler helped me out big once. He used that to guilt me into it. But no matter what shouldn’t have lied to you. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t apologize. I’m actually glad you were part of this whole production.”

“What do you mean?”

I caught his chin and curved a smile. “How would you feel about betraying them and becoming my accomplice?”
