Bella’s POV The guards came to collect me the next morning. I was weak and starving. My entire body shook as they dragged me out to the carriage. “Get it,” they hissed at me. I crumpled into the seat like a rag doll. The trees blurred by. My ribs hurt. My face was swollen. My heart squeezed in my chest. ‘It will be over soon,’ I told myself. Then I could curl up in my bedroom and wait to die. Every breath I took was a sharp, raw pain. Snow was agitated. She paced inside me, back and forth. The closer we got to the wizard’s house, the more agitated she became. The carriage stopped. The wizard’s cottage was beautiful. Ivy covered walls. A thatched roof dark with moss. Smoke curled from the chimney. Silas was already there. He’d come in his own, private, luxurious carriage. “The wizard’s name is Mustor,” he told me without making eye contact. “When the ritual is complete, the guards will bring you back.” Mustor appeared in the doorway. He was short with black eyes. An uneasy feeling settled over me. Silas made for his carriage. “You’re leaving me here?” I asked. My eyes flitted to the wizard. “All alone.” Silas let out an exasperated sigh. “Yes, Madison. I’m leaving you here.” “But…” I wrung at my wine-stained dress. I didn’t want to be alone. I was scared. “Can you…stay? Please?” Silas turned and locked eyes with me. “What’s the issue, Bella?” His voice was flat. “I’m…I’m scared,” I confessed. “Please. Just stay with me. I’ll never ask you for anything ever again. I promise.” “You’re promises aren’t worth anything,” he scoffed. “Go on. Take whatever dignity you have left and go inside.” His words were sharp and callous. They twisted in my stomach. He got into his carriage and left. But the words wouldn’t come to my lips. So I shook my head. “Bella,” the wizard said. His voice was soft, almost gentle. “Please. Come in.” I followed him into his cottage. He led me through the front room, to a ritual room at the back. The stone floor was inscribed with runes. They pulsed. That’s when I saw it. In the center of the room. A metal table with leather restraints. Leather restraints. Panic flooded through me. “Lie down,” Mustor said. He gestured at the table. “The sooner we begin, the sooner it will be over.” I swallowed hard. I didn’t like the looks of this. Snow was snarling inside me. My hands shook as I hoisted myself onto the table. The metal was cold through my dirty, wine-stained dress. Mustor fastened the restraints. The leather was tight around my wrists and ankles. I was flat against the table, pinned down, unable to move. My heart pounded in my chest. “How long will the rebirth process take?” I asked. My voice was thin. He paused. He was lighting candles around the table with a snap of his finger. The flames were black and ominous looking. He met my eyes. Something shifted on his face. “Rebirth?” he said. “The Rebirth Ritual,” I said. “How long will it last?” “That’s not what this is,” he said plainly. He crossed to a small table by the wall and picked up the contract. Silas must have given it to him before I got there. He held it up so I could see, pointed to a section of the text. “Read it,” he said. I read it. My eyes landed on a sentence about halfway down the page. My heart stopped. “Full wolf extraction. Permanent and irreversible.’ My blood went cold. “Extraction?” I whispered. “You mean this isn’t….a Rebirth Ritual?” “No,” Mustor shook his head. “It’s not.” A feeling of dread washed over me. Full extraction. That meant….he was going to remove my wolf completely. He was going to rip Snow right out of me. “No,” I said. My voice trembling. “That’s not what this is supposed to be.” “According to the contract, that’s exactly what this is.” I understood then. Madison. She was behind this. She was the one who found the wizard. She must have tampered with the contract before I signed it. She didn’t want to use my wolf to awaken hers. She wanted to kill it. “I don’t want to do this,” I said. I struggled against the restraints. “I don’t give my consent.” “Your signature is right there,” Mustor said. “The contract is binding. The magic is sealed. I cannot alter the terms.” “Let me go,” I cried. “Tear it up. I’ll forfeit…” “That isn’t an option. The magic has already begun.” No no no. Not my wolf. Not Snow. This wasn’t happening. This couldn’t be happening. “Please,” I said. He ignored me. I screamed. “HELP ME! PLEASE! SOMEONE HELP ME.” But there was no one to hear me. We were in the middle of the Ashwood forest. Mustor snapped his fingers. The last black flame lit. I could taste the dark magic, thick in the air. He locked eyes with me. “Brace yourself, dear.” His voice was monotone. “This is going to hurt.” “Wait. Please,” I begged him. “I won’t survive this. I’m sick. Please.” But before I could finish my sentence, a red hot pain ripped through my chest. My entire body went rigid. “Bella?” Snow called for me. Her voice was panicked. Her eyes were flooded with fear. She cowered, lowering her head. She could sense what was about to happen. “He’s going to take me.” I tried to soothe her. Tears streamed down my cheeks. Another red hot flash of pain. It was excruciating. I bit down on my lip. Then… “BELLA!” Snow howled. She tossed her head. Her entire body seized. A bright white light flashed before my eyes. The pain was unbearable. I felt her being pulled from me. “Bella,” she sobbed. “Don’t let him take me. Please, Bella.” And then her voice was gone. My chest squeezed. My eyes were open. But I couldn’t see anything. There was a haze over my vision. The haze started to turn black. My heart slowed. My breath was shallow and raspy. I understood what was happening. But I was powerless to stop it. I was dying. Bella was gone and I was dying, there, on that wizard’s table in the middle of the Ashwood forest. All alone. I gave into death. “Snow.” It was the last word I whispered before it all went black. And death took me.
