My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 21

Looking at the desperate sincerity on his face, I finally did laugh.

“Jake, I understand wanting the child. But Chloe can give you a child too, can’t she? The woman you’re so determined to be responsible for could have your baby. Wouldn’t that be perfect?”

Jake’s face instantly darkened.

I pressed on. “And your feelings for her aren’t exactly shallow. If it was only about responsibility, you wouldn’t have married a woman you didn’t love just to get me away from Mark and clear a path for her.”

His hand was still braced against the door, the veins standing out on the back of it.

He seemed to be fighting back a wave of anger, but it wasn’t directed at me.

After a long moment, he finally looked up.

“Chloe lied to me,” he said.

I froze.

His eyes were bloodshot, his voice raw with pain.

“Elara, I’m so sorry. I was wrong for so long. She fooled me, and I fooled myself. I couldn’t see anything clearly.” He looked at me as if I were his last hope. “For the baby’s sake, give me one more chance.”

It was the first time I had ever seen him like this.

I didn’t know what had happened between them.

But it no longer had anything to do with me.

“Jake, I really did love you,” I said calmly. “The day you proposed, I was so happy I felt like I could die in that moment and it would have been worth it. Later, when I found out why you married me, I was hurt, but I still thought… I thought if I just kept being good to you, you would eventually see me.”

I paused.

“But I was wrong. Your focus was always on Chloe and your so-called responsibility. I used to have the strength to love you. I don’t anymore.”

I looked him straight in the eye and delivered the final blow.

“I’ve already stepped aside. So let me go. It’s better for both of us if we end it here.”
