My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 18

As if on cue, Jake’s phone rang again.

Still Chloe.

This time, he answered.

The moment he did, her tearful voice crackled through the speaker, loud enough for me to hear even from a few feet away.

“Jake… I feel awful. Where are you?”

Jake’s brow furrowed with immediate concern.

Seeing that reaction used to break my heart. Now, it just felt pathetic.

I seized the opportunity and turned to leave.

As I walked away, I heard him lower his voice. “I’ll have the doctor come check on you.”

I didn’t look back. I hailed the first taxi I saw.

I had an appointment, and I was already late.

By the time Jake came after me, I was already in the car. The door slammed shut just as he reached the curb.

The car headed downtown.

I was meeting with a gallery owner. We’d been corresponding by email about a potential collaboration.

The meeting was at a quiet café inside his gallery.

When I arrived, I saw that my potential partner was a handsome man who immediately stood and pulled out my chair.

“Elara? I’m Leo.”

“Hello, Leo.”

We shook hands and sat down to go over the contract details.

He was deeply familiar with my work, not just from my Etsy shop but from my older collections as well. When he spoke about my designs, his eyes lit up with genuine appreciation.

The terms were fair, and I signed the contract quickly.

Toward the end of our meeting, his gaze drifted to my stomach, which was just beginning to show a gentle curve. His expression was sincere, not intrusive.

“You mentioned your situation briefly in your email,” he said. “If you’re comfortable, I’d like to hear it from you.”
