My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 17

He pulled it from his pocket. When he saw the caller’s name, his expression soured.

It was Chloe.

A faint smile touched my lips.

“Answer it,” I said. “It’s not like you haven’t taken her calls in front of me before. Now that we’re all but over, you have even less reason to worry about my feelings.”

I turned to go.

But Jake declined the call and moved to block my path.

“Elara, that’s not what I meant.” He sounded desperate. “You know Chloe’s condition. The trauma. I’m just worried something will happen to her.”

It was laughable.

He’d never felt the need to explain himself before. Now that it was over, he was full of explanations.

I remembered Chloe once telling me, her voice dripping with smug satisfaction, that she wasn’t sick at all. She just knew how to make Jake choose her, always.

“Jake, I told you before that Chloe admitted to me she wasn’t sick,” I said, looking him in the eye. “You didn’t believe me then. I doubt you’ll believe me now.”

I took a step back.

“You’re not afraid of losing me, and you’re not afraid of losing this child. You’re just not used to the person who always waited for you suddenly being gone. You’ll get over it.”

I walked around him.

“Stop wasting your time here. Go be with Chloe.”
