My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 14

Marrying Jake was all I had ever wanted.

After the wedding, I threw myself completely into our marriage.

To his friends, I became the one who handled everything. The food for get-togethers, the drinks, the desserts—I prepared it all.

At some point, the late-night calls started.

It was always one of his friends on the other end, their voice laced with fake concern, telling me Jake had drunk too much or was in a bad mood and that I needed to come get him.

Every time, no matter how late, I would rush over.

And every time, I was met with a room full of laughter.

Jake would be there too, watching me hurry in, breathless and disheveled, with an amused look on his face.

The humiliation stung.

But I always told myself that if it made him happy, it was worth it.

My compliance only made them bolder.

I still remember the first time I met Chloe.

She was the widow of Jake’s fallen comrade. From the moment she saw me, her gaze was hostile, as if she were sizing up an irritation.

Because she was important to Jake, I tried to be kind to her.

But at those parties where I was the butt of the joke, she was always the most enthusiastic member of the audience.

For Jake’s sake, I never said a word.

Until three months after the wedding, when I overheard some drunken gossip and pieced together a truth so cruel it was almost laughable.

Jake hadn’t married me because he loved me.

Even that long-ago moment when he’d defended me wasn’t what I thought it was.

He had only wanted to steal me away from Mark.

Because Chloe had wanted Mark for herself.
