My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 08

My words only made Chloe’s smile widen.

But as soon as Jake stepped outside, her expression crumpled into a mask of impending tears.

“Elara, this is all my fault.” Her voice trembled with manufactured guilt. “I’m in such a bad place… Jake only took pity on me, and now you’ve been hurt because of it.”

I almost laughed.

She should have been an actress.

Jake glanced at me before turning his full attention back to Chloe.

“It’s fine. I’ve already explained everything to Elara,” he said. “Once you’re stable, she and I will start over.”

I saw the smile on Chloe’s face freeze.

“Let’s go.” I pulled open the car door and slid into the back seat.

On the way, the two of them sat up front. Chloe kept showing Jake things on her phone, murmuring to him. I just closed my eyes and tuned them out.

At the law firm, the process was swift.

We had no property disputes, no children to consider. We signed the separation agreement and the paperwork for an uncontested divorce, which would be finalized by the court.

I just wanted it to be over.

Once I had my signed copy, I waved the folder at Jake.

“I’ll get my own ride. Don’t let me hold you two up. Have a good day.”

I turned and walked away, desperate to be gone.

But just then, an assistant rushed past with an armload of files, bumping into me. The folder slipped from my hand.

Papers scattered across the polished floor.

One sheet slid out and came to a stop directly at Jake’s feet.

It was the pregnancy report.

My heart plummeted.

I had never intended for him to know.

I bent down quickly to grab it, but Jake was faster.

The paper was already in his hand.
