My Marriage: His Debt to Another Woman Chapter 07

“Jake, you don’t need to explain anything about Chloe to me anymore,” I said, my voice flat. “I don’t want to hear it.”

I looked back at him.

“You’re the one who wanted this, right? So let’s just get it over with. We can go sign the papers right now. Maybe I’ll win an award for Most Cooperative Ex-Wife.”

The irony in my own voice was bitter.

What was the point of holding on to a man who didn’t have a place for you in his heart?

Jake looked like he wanted to argue, but I had already pulled open the door.

I knew his speech by heart.

About a year ago, another so-called PTSD relapse had sent him to Chloe’s side for a full week. When he came back, he told me she needed constant emotional support.

Not long after, Chloe sent me a text.

[I just said I didn’t want to be alone, and Jake believed me.]

Later, I saw her clutching a bottle of vitamins, crying to Jake that they were antidepressants she couldn’t live without.

That’s when I finally understood.

She loved playing the patient, and he loved playing her savior.

Now, I just didn’t care.

Outside, Chloe was waiting by Jake’s car. When she saw me, she didn’t bother to hide the smug satisfaction on her face.

She hurried over, her voice cloyingly sweet.

“Elara, you won’t mind if I come with you to sign the papers, will you?”

I looked at her and smiled.

“Of course not,” I said. “It’s perfect, actually. You can go celebrate right after. Saves you a dinner reservation.”
