My Mafia Husband Smelled Like His Secretary, Who Turned Out To Be My Half-Sister Chapter 06

Sophia held her face and cried softly. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry…”

Jacob looked away first. “I’m taking her home,” he said flatly.

Sophia seemed surprised he let me off that easy. She hurried after him.

When she caught his sleeve, he slowed down. Then pulled her into his arms.

I closed my eyes and let the pain burn.

For days, Anna woke up screaming from nightmares.

I stayed with her day and night. Held her. Distracted her. Tried to push the fear out of her little heart.

Jacob still stayed at the hotel. But he started sending Anna gifts every day.

Sometimes there was something for me, too.

Seasonal designer bags. Necklaces from auctions. Full sets of luxury makeup.

They looked small and sad mixed in with all the toys. But each one was expensive.

For Jacob, that was basically an apology.

Until one day, he actually came back to the estate.

Anna jumped off her chair at dinner and ran to him.

My smile faded. I told the nanny to set another place.

At the table, father and daughter laughed together.

That night, after I put Anna to bed, I went back to the bedroom. Jacob was still there.

He paused while taking off his watch. Looked up at me.

I knew he was waiting for me to give in. So I grabbed my pillow.

“I’ll take the guest room.”

For a second, he looked shocked. Then angry.

“Polly, have I spoiled you so much that you forgot how to be a proper Donna?”

I met his glare. “I also haven’t forgotten that we already had the lawyers draw up divorce papers.”

He walked toward me. The Don’s pressure rolled off him in waves.

For a moment, something flickered in his dark eyes. Then it went cold.

He smiled cruelly. “Tomorrow morning. You will personally deliver my clothes to Sophia’s place.”

Jacob left again that night.

The next morning, when I got to Sophia’s door, I realized she didn’t even know Jacob was moving in with her.

At first, her face lit up. Then the tears came.

“Donna, I love the Don, but we’ve never crossed that line. I won’t be his secret mistress…”

I cut her off. “I filed for divorce. You were there.”

She looked guilty. “I still—”

“Then go tell Jacob yourself.” I turned and left.

On the drive back to the estate, the sky went dark. Rain started falling.

The second the first drop hit my windshield, I thought of my mother. She’d been gone for years.

I drove to the cemetery on the outskirts of the city.

When I got to her grave, I couldn’t speak.

My mother’s headstone was right next to another one. Her simple single grave had been turned into a fancy double plot.

When I read the name on the other stone, my brain went numb.

My father. The monster who put my mother in her grave.

I still remembered her last words. She said she didn’t want to be buried next to him.

My poor mother, who suffered her whole life. And on her headstone, she still had his last name.

Scott.

The cemetery worker saw me frozen. “Donna, you didn’t know? Just last month, the Don had this gentleman moved next to your mother. Your sister was there too.”

Sister?

It all clicked.

Why Jacob said Sophia reminded him of me. Her last name was Scott.

Mine used to be, too.

Sophia was my half-sister.
