My Mafia Ex-Boyfriend Went Crazy After Learning of My Death Chapter 09: The Final Sea

Dante drove to Atlantic City.

The old, abandoned pier was still there. The wooden posts were half-rotten from the sea. The deck planks had missing sections, groaning under the wind.

It was where we’d shared our first kiss.

Seven years ago, summer. He’d just won a fight, two hundred dollars. He brought me here and bought a bottle of cheap sparkling wine.

We sat at the edge of the pier, feet dangling over the water. He drank half the bottle, his face turned red, and then suddenly he leaned over and kissed me.

His lips were shaking.

My heart was shaking too.

Now I stood in that same spot, watching him at the end of the pier.

The water was black. The moon hid behind clouds. The wind was strong, whipping his coat.

He took the pendant from his neck, opened it, and held the ash vial in his palm.

Then he started walking into the sea.

The water rose over his ankles, his calves, his knees.

I floated in front of him, shaking my head violently, screaming. “No! Dante! Please, don’t do this!”

He couldn’t hear.

He kept walking. The water reached his waist, his chest.

I threw myself at him, trying to wrap my arms around him. My hands passed through his body. I couldn’t hold onto anything.

“Dante! Live! Please live!”

He walked until the water was at his neck. Then he stopped. He looked down at the vial in his hand.

“Nora,” he said, his voice torn apart by the wind. “I’m coming to find you.”

Then he let go.

The vial floated on the surface.

He sank.
