The toothbrush, the perfume, the hair dryer in the bathroom—all in their usual places.

This didn’t look like someone leaving for a short trip.

Where had she gone?

Terrified that something had happened to me, Carter called his assistant and ordered him to use every resource available to find me.

He didn’t sleep that night.

He sat in the living room, waiting for news, for a phone call, for any sign that Amelia was coming back.

But there was nothing.

Savannah watched him, her jealousy a toxic burn.

She deliberately pinched the sleeping baby in her arms. The infant’s piercing cry shattered the morning quiet.

She had hoped to pull Carter’s attention back to her.

Instead, he whirled on her, his voice a furious roar.

“Savannah, if you can’t handle a baby, give him to the nanny! That crying is splitting my head open!”

Savannah froze.

Tears welled in her eyes. “Carter, I know you’re upset that Amelia’s gone, but it’s not the baby’s fault. Why are you taking it out on us?”

Carter looked at her, a flicker of guilt crossing his face. He pressed the heels of his hands into his eyes.

“I’m sorry. I just…”

He just didn’t know where Amelia was.

And the panic was a physical weight, crushing the air from his lungs.

Just then, the old butler approached, bowing slightly.

“Sir, the lawn by the polo field… should we have someone clean it now?”

Carter’s head snapped up.

“What?”

“The blood, sir,” the butler said quietly. “From where you and Madam argued. She bled a great deal. It’s stained the white roses.”

Before the butler could finish, Carter was already out the door.
