My Husband’s Heir Cost Him His Own Daughter Chapter 12

In the suffocating silence, Carter raised a hand and took the envelope.

It was heavier than he’d expected.

As if it held not just paper, but a consequence he was not prepared to face.

He signed his name. The courier took the receipt and departed.

The music had stopped.

Every eye was on Carter.

No one spoke, as if they were all waiting for the second act to begin.

“What kind of law firm has such terrible timing?” one of Carter’s friends said, trying to break the tension. He walked over and clapped him on the shoulder. “It’s probably just business. Deal with it later. Don’t let it ruin the mood.”

Carter didn’t hear him.

He could only hear the frantic, muffled thud of his own heart.

He lowered his head, his fingers trembling as he tore open the envelope.

He pulled out not a business contract or a lawyer’s letter.

It was a bound legal document.

And at the top of the first page, the title was printed in stark, black letters:

FINAL JUDGMENT OF DIVORCE

A bright red court seal was stamped in the lower-right corner.

Beside it, a judge’s signature.

The date of entry was today.

It was final.

Carter swayed, nearly losing his footing.

He couldn’t believe his eyes.

It was supposed to be temporary.

They were supposed to remarry.

How dare she? How dare Amelia let it become final?

“Oh my God…” Savannah gasped, covering her mouth. A flash of pure delight crossed her eyes before she could mask it. In the next instant, her expression crumpled into a mask of tearful sympathy as she clutched his arm.
