My Husband’s Happiness Reached 100% When I Left Chapter 03

I stood frozen, grief crashing over me.

When I’d been pregnant, his Happiness Index only rose 1%.

Now, it had jumped more than ten points at once.

Seeing me freeze, Damian came over and gently smoothed my hair.

“Don’t worry. The position of Mrs. Ashford will always be yours.”

“Once Brielle has the baby, we’ll legally adopt it under your name. Sound good?”

“But right now Brielle doesn’t want to keep the baby—because you scared her with that soup.”

“Go apologize to her. Promise it won’t happen again, and this will all blow over. Be good.”

Seeing my silence, he frowned, his patience thinning further.

“I know you didn’t mean it, but it happened. Brielle’s young and doesn’t know better—why hold it against her?”

“At least you still have a title. She’s got nothing, following me around with no legal standing at all—I’ve already wronged her enough. Of course I have to make it up to her.”

“Are you going to apologize or not?”

If this had been before, I would never have apologized. I would have made everyone’s life miserable.

But now, I just smiled, calm.

“Fine. I’ll apologize.”

Damian blinked, genuinely startled.

“Really? Why aren’t you making a scene this time?”

I threw back the covers and got out of bed.

“Nothing to make a scene about. Whatever makes you happy.”

Damian’s mouth curved up. He pulled me into a pleased embrace and kissed my forehead.

“Good girl. You’ve always been the reasonable one.”

His Happiness Index rose to 98%.

I smiled, and let go of the hand I’d been clenching tight.

The last thread of feeling I had for him disappeared completely.

That man who used to stand in front of me and swear he’d always be on my side—he was long gone.

The Damian in front of me now wasn’t the man I’d fallen in love with.

He pulled me toward the door, then seemed to remember something:

“Oh right—why were you in the OB-GYN ward too? Is our son okay?”

“What happened to your hand?”

Blood was seeping from my palm.

He immediately pulled out a Band-Aid he always carried and pressed it onto the wound.

I used to bump into things and scrape myself all the time, which was why he’d carried Band-Aids on him for years.

But this time, I didn’t feel touched at all. Just hollow.

I pulled my hand back and pushed the door open, calm:

“It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

Brielle was curled up on the hospital bed, trembling.

The moment she saw me, tears spilled down her face.

“Why are you here?! Isn’t burning me enough?!”

Damian rushed to her side, wrapping her in his arms, his face full of tenderness.

“Annika came to apologize.”

I lowered my head too, my voice quiet but firm:

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have burned you. It won’t happen again.”

“I can’t hear you.”

She pouted, playing the victim.

Damian shot me a look, and I raised my voice.

“I’m sorry.”

“That’s not sincere enough. Get on your knees and beg my forgiveness three times, and I’ll forgive you.”

I looked up sharply, only to see Damian frowning, nodding at me.

There was no mistaking the threat in his eyes.

I smiled, dropped to my knees without hesitation, and called out loudly, three times:

“I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

My voice rang through the whole room.

Even Brielle looked stunned for a second, staring at me with something like shock.

She clearly hadn’t expected me to actually do it.

After all, the old me had been unbearably proud.

Damian strode over and grabbed my wrist, hard.

His expression was unreadable.

“Annika Reyes, what is going on with you?”
