My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 08

My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 08

At first, I still dropped by the hospital every now and then, but eventually, I stopped going altogether.

I spent my days going out for dinner and drinks with friends, genuinely enjoying myself.

Why would I waste my time playing the part of the devoted wife?

Alonzo and Makayla occupied less and less of my thoughts.

Then, my project reached its most critical stage. My director had a word with me, hinting that I was at the top of the list for a promotion.

During those final days of wrapping everything up, I was completely buried in work.

That was when I received a call from an unknown number.

The voice was muffled, but I could tell it was a man.

“Are you a family member of Mr. Plumridge? He is in critical condition. You need to come at once.”

I froze for a moment.

I didn’t expect it to happen quite so soon.

After all, we were husband and wife. I figured I owed it to him to see him one last time.

I drove over, only to find Alonzo sitting up in bed, looking perfectly fine.

His eyes lit up the moment he saw me. “Jazzy, you finally came to see me. You…”

Anger flared in me instantly.

“Alonzo, Have you lost your ever–loving mind? Do you have any idea how important this period is for my promotion?”

I turned to leave immediately.

His expression crumpled. Seeing that I was actually walking out, he stumbled to his feet to grab me, but the sudden movement made him cough up a mouthful of blood.

My new clothes were instantly stained a bright, violent red.

When he looked at me again, his eyes were filled with intense panic and confusion. “Jazlyn… why don’t you care about me anymore?

“Don’t you care if I die and go

with her?”

I stared at him, finding his words utterly bizarre.

After everything that had happened, what was the point of playing the regretful husband now?

I spoke up then. “Didn’t you two say the living can’t compete with the dead? Fine–I’m not competing anymore.

“Enjoy your perfect little ghost romance.

Alonzo’s face went blank, and I took the opportunity to pull away.

Just then, a nurse pushed the door open, carrying a medication tray.

When she saw the blood at the corner of his mouth, she sighed. “Mr. Plumridge, how could you sneak a call while the nurse’s station was

empty just to lie about being in critical condition?

“What’s it this time? Are you having hallucinations again?”

He flew into a sudden rage, like a cat whose tail had been stepped on.

He snapped his head up. “I’ve told you a thousand times–they aren’t hallucinations! She’s the one destroying my health!

“My wife can prove it! Jazlyn, you can see Makayla too, can’t you?”

He looked at me, his eyes full of desperate hope.

I realized then that I couldn’t see Makayla at all–not even a glimpse.

Yet, from his frantic state, it was clear she was standing right beside

him.

I understood now.

This was what the medium had meant–the karmic bond between me and these two was finally breaking.

I looked at Alonzo and slowly shook my head. “Darling, what are you talking about? There’s nothing there.”

I turned to the nurse, showing just the right amount of concern. “It seems his illness has really messed with his head. Please make sure he gets the

proper treatment.

Then I walked away, leaving him staring after me, stunned.

Behind me, his gut–wrenching shouts erupted.

“Jazlyn! You saw her all along! I held her, kissed her, slept with her for so long–you saw everything! Why else would you be so angry? Why would you ignore me?

“Answer me! Answer me! Why are you lying?

“Makayla, stop looking at me with that pathetic expression! Even if you saved me, I’m not dying with you!”

At that, I paused for a moment.

Of course. He knew exactly what he was doing all along.

Alonzo spiraled into madness. He refused to cooperate with the hospital staff and spent his days frantically searching for ways to exorcise ghosts, his screams echoing through the ward.

During his brief moments of clarity, he would call out my name, crying that he regretted everything.

The day he died happened to be the same day my promotion was made official.

I moved into my own private office–larger than Alonzo’s ever was- with a doubled salary and a team of talented, driven young professionals under my lead.

I went to the hospital to see him one last time. He was bedridden, his body a tangle of tubes, making occasional, wet gurgling sounds.

When he saw me, he somehow found the strength to speak. “Makayla is a liar. She hates me. She only came back for revenge.

“She’s a bitch. I never should have trusted her.”

He looked at me, a few stray tears escaping his eyes. “Jazzy, you’re the only one who truly loved me. Even after everything I did, you don’t blame me.

“Let’s not get divorced. In our next life, let’s stay together. Okay?”

I stared down at him, feeling absolutely nothing.

It seemed he had finally learned the truth about who had actually saved him that day.

I didn’t quite understand why he thought Makayla was out for revenge.

But none of it mattered anymore.

I rejected his plea and instead asked him, “Did you honestly think I dropped the divorce because I still love you?”

He looked confused.

“A man on his deathbed, with plenty of money left and no children.

“Where else could I find a better deal? Why on earth would I get divorced?”

He froze, his eyes suddenly widening as the realization hit him.

Shock and disbelief flashed violently in his gaze.

“Even you… even you, too… why…”

The monitor readings began to spike wildly.

I was told that late that night, after I had already left, Alonzo passed

away.

Before he died, he muttered one last time, “They… they’re all out for

revenge…

But I just checked the balance in my bank account, then happily ate a few more skewers of grilled meat at the party.
