My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 04

My Husband’s Ghost Lover Chapter 04

I met Alonzo when I joined the company right after university.
Back then, he wasn’t very high up the ladder, but the bosses clearly saw he was going places. His looks didn’t hurt either; he always stood out among his colleagues.
I’ve always admired competence, and I’ll admit I’ve always been a sucker for a pretty face, so falling for him felt almost inevitable.
Unexpectedly, it was Alonzo who took the initiative to approach me.
“You must be Jazlyn,” he said. “The one who crushed the entrance exams and the interviews. I’m impressed.”
The admiration in his eyes made my heart skip a beat.
Later, when he eventually made a move, I actually turned him down.
“I want us to be equals at work before we date,” I told him.
I didn’t want anyone to think I was climbing the ranks through connections. Besides, even if things didn’t work out between us, that level of hard work would only benefit my own future.
So, I became the most driven new hire in the office.
After another promotion, I finally reached the same level as Alonzo.
My supervisor had been hesitant about it at the time.
“You’ve moved up the ladder incredibly fast these last few years. But this next role is even more demanding. Have you thought about your future—marriage, kids?
“We’re just looking out for your career. We wouldn’t want to promote you only for you to be held back by those kinds of responsibilities.”
I frowned.
Just as I was about to respond, Alonzo spoke up for me.
“Jazlyn nearly worked herself into a stomach ulcer trying to land a client, and she pulled several all-nighters revising that one proposal. If you deny her a promotion and a raise based on such discriminatory reasoning, I’ll have to reconsider whether this company’s values align with my own.”
The oily-faced supervisor looked embarrassed and eventually approved my application.
Later, Alonzo confessed his feelings to me again.
I cried in his arms, letting out everything I had been holding back.
That day, I asked him—since I’d long since lost my youthful glow from working so hard, why did he still like me?
He kissed away my tears. “These marks are badges of your hard work. That kind of beauty never fades.
“I will always love who you are on the inside, not just your appearance. You have to remember that.”
Alonzo had once reinforced my belief in “loving myself” and helped free me from my irrational anxieties.
Now, he was attacking me over my appearance.
His face flushed a deep crimson at my words, especially with Makayla right there.
“Jazlyn, do you have to be so foul-mouthed? What do you gain from making up lies like that?”
“If it’s a lie, why are you so angry?”
The room fell silent, except for the sound of Alonzo’s heavy, ragged breathing.
Seeing this, Makayla immediately went over to soothe him and looked at me disapprovingly. “Jazzy, I’m just being fair.
“It wasn’t my choice to be tied to him. You shouldn’t speak to your husband that way. As his wife, you should be patient and supportive.”
I ignored her.
With her comforting him, Alonzo managed to calm down a little.
He looked at me with pure disgust. “I never realized you harbored so much resentment toward me. If you’re going to keep acting like this, I think we need some space to cool off.
“But think about it carefully. You’re already in your thirties, past your prime. Who else is going to put up with you besides me?”
Words like that barely even stung anymore.
I might not be as young as I once was, but no one stays young forever.
After all these years of hard work, the balance in my bank account is what truly comforts me—that is what actually lasts.
I smiled. “There’s no need for a trial separation.
“Let’s just get a divorce.”
