My Husband’s Ex-Girlfriend Is Sleeping in Our Marriage Bed Chapter 11

The day we signed the papers was gray and overcast.

The courthouse was packed with people-some getting married, some getting divorced.

I saw people walk in crying and walk out crying.

Julian and I sat in a corner of the lobby, neither of us saying a word.

When our turn came, the clerk asked the standard question.

“Is this a mutual decision to dissolve the marriage?”

“Yes,” I said.

Julian paused for two beats. “Yes,” he whispered.

As the seal hit the paper, something inside me collapsed.

It didn’t hurt. It was just… empty.

Outside, Tess was waiting for me, jingling her car keys.

“Come on, girl. Dinner is on me. Let’s celebrate your freedom.”

I started to smile, but then I heard his voice behind me.

“Sloane,”

I turned around.

He was standing on the steps, clutching his copy of the divorce decree, like it was burning him..

The wind was strong, blowing his shirt against his frame.

He’d lost a lot of weight. His features were sharper, his eyes filled with exhaustion and longing.

“Is this really how we end?”

Tess rolled her eyes, ready to snap at him, but I held up a hand.

I walked down the steps and stood in front of him.

Close enough to see every bit of regret on his face.

I let out a small, soft laugh.

“Julian, do you know what kind of man I hate most in my cases?”

He froze, saying nothing.

“I hate the kind who breaks a woman until there’s nothing left, and then, with the divorce papers in his hand, asks if

they can try again.”

My voice was cold.

“Because the people who actually want to ‘try again’ don’t wait until they’ve lost everything.”

The light in his eyes died out, spark by spark.

“You want to know if this is it? Yes. It is.”

“Not because of Vivian, or the gossip, or the money you gave her.”

“It’s because you personally pushed the one person who was always on your side over to the enemy lines.”

“I didn’t leave because of Vivian, Julian. I left because I finally saw you for exactly what you are.”

He looked like he’d been nailed to the spot.

I didn’t stay. I turned and walked away.

As I reached the car, I heard a faint voice behind me.

“I’m sorry.”

It was weak and raspy, vanishing in the wind.

I didn’t look back. Some apologies come too late to matter.

After the divorce, I remodeled the house,

New bed, new sheets, new curtains,

I used to think the floor-to-ceiling windows let in too much sun, but now I loved it.

When the light hit, there was nowhere for secrets to hide.

Julian’s mother came to see me once. She brought the heirloom bracelet.

She looked much older than I remembered.

“Sloane,” she said after a long silence. “Our family failed you. I’m sorry.”

I took the bracelet, looked at it, and set it back on the table.

‘Take it back, Mrs. Vance.”

She looked stunned.

“I used to cherish this because it represented my place in the family,” I said with a small smile. “I don’t need that

anymore. I don’t care about the title.”

Her lips trembled, but she said nothing.

As she got to the door, she looked back at me, her eyes red.

“Julian… he hasn’t been doing well lately.”

“Hmm.” I replied. “Adults have to pay for the choices they make.”

I heard bits of news about him after that.

He’d overhauled the company and stopped letting his mother interfere in his life.

They said he was working until dawn every night, trying to fill some void with work.

And I heard Vivian showed up one last time.

She wasn’t there to win him back. She was there for money.

She waited outside his office for an entire afternoon, crying about being desperate.

If it had been the old Julian, he probably would have caved.

But this time, he only said one thing.

“I can help you find a lawyer, a job, or a charity. But other than that, don’t ever come here again.”

Vivian’s face went white.

She probably never imagined her “safety net” would finally snap.

When I heard the story, I felt nothing. He finally learned about boundaries, but it had nothing to do with me.
