My Husband Wanted a Divorce. The Comments Told Me Why Chapter 12

I felt a sharp pain in my chest. “Oh.”

Hunter’s breathing was a little heavy, like he was trying hard to control himself. “Did you need something?”

“No.” I hung up fast.

I guess I’d overestimated his morals. I knew exactly what that breathing meant.

[Told you. The guy is practically losing his mind.]

[And Summer’s succubus condition is acting up at the perfect time. They’re a perfect match.]

[They’re probably going at it all night long.]

[Hunter learned all his moves on Stella. Now he gets to use them on Summer.]

[I can’t even imagine how satisfied those two must be.]

I stared at the ceiling and laughed bitterly. I hadn’t done my job as a wife and had pushed him further and further away.

Now he’d finally left my world. But even if I’d made mistakes, we weren’t divorced yet. He shouldn’t be spending the night with another woman.

I waited anxiously for Julian to finish his analysis. He didn’t call.

I bit my lip so hard I almost drew blood.

An hour and a half later, the door to the bungalow swung open.

Hunter knocked on my bedroom door. “Stella, open up.”

I was so weak I could barely stand. I went to the door in my bare feet.

Hunter was cold from the night air. He saw something was wrong and pulled me into his arms. “What’s wrong? Where does it hurt?”

It was a two-hour drive from Coast Road to the lab. Hunter had made it in an hour and a half.

He drove like a maniac. What if he’d crashed?

Wait. If he got here this fast… did that mean he hadn’t done anything to betray me?

I stared at his lips. I couldn’t think straight. All I felt was desire.

“I was doing an experiment and got pricked by a plant. I feel awful.”

Hunter carried me to the bed and felt my forehead. “What kind of plant? Is it dangerous?”

I saw a smeared lipstick stain on Hunter’s neck. Like he’d tried to wipe it off but hadn’t quite managed.

It was so obvious.

Knowing Hunter, he loved it when his partner left marks on him.

When we used to be together, he would push my head toward his neck and whisper, “Bite me harder.”

“I don’t care if it hurts.”

“Leave a mark.”

[Hunter shows up at the ice queen’s place with Summer’s lipstick still on his neck.]

[It’s such a blatant provocation.]

[On the surface he’s trying to win her back, but really he’s just trying to get Stella to let go.]

I’d been about to tell him the truth, but now I held back. Another woman’s lipstick was on his neck.

No matter how bad I felt, I wasn’t going to let him touch me now.

“It’s fine. Julian is working on an antidote.” I pushed him away. “Get me some water.”

Hunter got me a glass of water and helped me drink it. He could tell I was burning up and tried to kiss me.

My phone rang, a sudden, jarring sound. I grabbed it like a lifeline and put it on speaker.

Julian’s excited voice came through. “Stella, I finished analyzing the compounds. No harmful substances. I’m preparing the injection now. Do you want it?”

“Yes,” I said. “I’ll come to you.”

I asked Hunter to carry me to the lab.

On the way, he kept pressing me. “Do you really have to get the injection?”

“Are there any risks or side effects?”

“Stella, let me help you. Please.”
