My Husband Tried to Give His Fortune to His Secret Son, But He Forgot Our Prenup Chapter 09

The hallway was flooded with sunlight. I’d only taken a few steps when my vision suddenly went black, and

my knees gave out.

Wendy caught me immediately. “Mom!”

“I’m fine.” I leaned against my daughter and gently patted her hand. “It’s an old problem. I just can’t handle too

much emotional stress.”

Wendy’s eyes filled with tears. “You should’ve told me.”

I smiled but didn’t answer.

All those years of eating out, shopping, playing cards, and posting pictures of leisurely afternoons hadn’t

been because I was carefree. It was just that my body couldn’t withstand intense emotional strain.

The doctors had warned me that my health was fragile, and the complications from childbirth had left my

heart unable to handle too much stress.

Extreme joy or grief could both put my life at risk. So I waited and waited thirty years.

I waited for Skyler to climb as high as he possibly could until he believed everything was under his control.

Then I made sure he fell.

Once Wendy helped me into the car, I leaned back against the seat and closed my eyes.

“Wendy, it’s yours from here.”

“Don’t worry, Mom.” Her voice was resolute. “I won’t let you down.”

Wendy was more ruthless than I was, and she moved faster.

Three days later, she officially took over as Chair of the Carter Group.

Her first move was to reclaim the luxury condo registered in Madeline’s name. Her second was to strip Lucas

of every position and authority he held at the company and remove him from senior management, and her

third was to freeze every account connected to the Hayes family.

Madeline came to the company and caused a scene, but security stopped her at the door.

She sat on the ground crying, accusing Wendy of being an ungrateful daughter and accusing the Carters of

trying to destroy her and Ethan.

Wendy stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows and glanced at her, then she said to her assistant, “If she keeps making a scene, call the police. Trespassing on someone else’s private property is enough to get her

into serious trouble.”

In the end, Madeline had no choice and left with her tail between her legs..

Skyler refused to accept the divorce.

Despite his illness, he had his attorney send a letter claiming that he’d signed the divorce agreement under

duress and demanding that the marital assets be divided again.

Wendy didn’t waste words on him and submitted the evidence of bigamy to the court. The day the court

accepted the case, Skyler’s attorney called, saying Skyler was willing to sign.

The divorce was finalized by the court.

Once everything was settled, Wendy cut off every benefit Skyler had received from the Carter family. His

position, compensation, credit card, driver, and house staff were all taken away.

But his medication wasn’t.

Wendy told me, “Mom, you said we should at least leave him his medication. It’s the decent thing to do.”

I nodded.

Then Skyler was sent to Madeline.

Wendy had his belongings packed and sent him, along with his medication, to the apartment Madeline was

renting. It was a small two-bedroom apartment in a rundown neighborhood, with rent of only two thousand

dollars a month.

Madeline stared at Skyler, then at the pile of luggage and the bag of medication.

She froze. “What does this mean?”

The assistant who had delivered him spoke politely. “Mr. Hayes’s future care will be your responsibility.” Then

he closed the door behind him.

Madeline turned toward Skyler, who was lying on the bed, his face gray and sunken, barely able to speak.

“Madeline… Could you get me some water?”

Madeline didn’t move. Looking at the man who had once been so confident and powerful but now could

barely sit up, suddenly, she laughed.

There was nothing behind the sound anymore.

Later, I heard that they argued every day in that little apartment.

Madeline called Skyler useless, and Skyler called her heartless.

Lucas visited occasionally, but he never stayed for more than ten minutes. Later, Lucas was prosecuted for misappropriating company funds and sentenced to three years in prison.

As for Skyler’s mother and sister, they were forced out of the two downtown properties and moved back to

their hometown.

I heard that on the day his mother left, she almost collapsed in heaving sobs.

I sat on the balcony at home, soaking up the sunlight while Wendy told me everything.

When she finished, I lifted my teacup and took a slow sip. The tea was fragrant and warm.

Wendy sat beside me and suddenly asked, “Mom, do you hate him?”

I thought about it, then replied, “No. Hating someone is exhausting.”

“I just want to watch you build the Carter family into something even stronger. And then I want to live my

own life.”

Wendy looked at me, then leaned over and rested her head on my shoulder. “Mom, you’ve worked so hard.”

I gently stroked her hair.

The sunlight warmed us both. Suddenly, a bird flew across the distant sky.

I closed my eyes and smiled.
