Kael pressed his lips tight.

I stared at him in silence.

The VIP room was deadly quiet.

After a long moment, he took a deep breath.

“No explanation?”

I shook my head.

“You used to be so good with words. You could turn lies into truth. Why won’t you even try

with me? Even if you just lie?”

He collapsed on top of me, his eyes red, his fingers wrapping tight around my neck again.

“Say something! Don’t just stay quiet!”

I didn’t fight. I tilted my head back, giving him my neck, staring straight into his eyes.

“My sister ran away from the wedding. Mom made me marry you instead, so-”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

He covered my mouth.

His glossy eyes stayed locked on mine, growing more hurt by the second, like a lost, scruffy

puppy.

I hesitated, then put my arms around his waist.

I knew what he wanted.

I was good at sweet-talking.

But I didn’t love him. Should I keep lying?

Well… I didn’t love anyone else, either. If I lied to him forever, he’d be happy, I’d be happy.

Everyone wins.

I blinked.

Perfect logic.

I turned back into the unapologetic liar I was.

I leaned up and kissed his lips, soft and pleading.

“I was stupid. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me, okay?”

“Honey, you know I’ve been with you since I graduated college. Days, nights-24 hours a day,

I’m with you. Please forgive me.”

Kael was five years older, and he loved acting like my protector.

Admit you’re wrong, promise to do better, bat your eyes a little. What else was he gonna do?

I stared at him confidently.

He stared back with red eyes, then buried his face in my neck like he was relieved.

No sound came out.

But I felt warm, heavy tears soaking through my shirt.

He was crying.

I froze, suddenly unsure if lying was right. I patted his back gently. “Kael-ah!”

He snapped me flat onto the couch.

“Keep lying to me forever.”

He whispered in my ear.

“The second you stop, I’ll kill you.”
