Ethan’s eyes widened. 

For once, he had no answer. 

“I only said that casually. Who told you to actually listen to everything she said?” 

“Before dawn, I want those photos and that trending post wiped clean. If you can’t do that, don’t bother coming back!” 

“And once the doctors arrive, send a few people to check on Sophie’s mother. I heard her condition isn’t stable right now.” 

Only after his men nodded again and again and fled in a panic did Ethan brace both hands against the wall. 

His whole body trembled like it had been hollowed out. 

“I’m sorry, Sophie. I didn’t know. I didn’t know…” 

His voice grew lower and lower, breaking with a sob. 

“Wake up, and I’ll never lie to you again. We’ll get a real certificate immediately. I won’t lie to you about anything anymore.” 

“Sophie, please wake up…” 

At dawn, the doctor finally came out with the test results. 

He looked at Ethan with a grave expression and spoke slowly. 

“The patient is temporarily out of danger, but her injuries are extremely severe. She has multiple fractures, damage to her internal organs, and most seriously…” 

The doctor paused, turned a page in the report, and continued. 

“Most seriously, because the patient had undergone multiple 

rounds of IVF before, her uterine lining was already severely damaged.” 

“This miscarriage caused irreversible harm to her body. It will likely be very difficult for her to get pregnant again.” 

Ethan’s face turned a shade paler. 

The doctor’s voice came in broken pieces. 

“According to the medical history we accessed, the patient underwent thirty rounds of IVF, all of which failed.” 

“In addition, at around ten o’clock this morning, the patient sent a message to her attending doctor, saying she had finally gotten pregnant and begging the doctor to help her keep the baby.” 

“The time she sent that message and the time of the miscarriage were less than thirty minutes apart.” 

The air seemed to freeze. 

Ethan was frozen in place little by little. 

A bone–deep chill spread from the bottom of his heart. 

No one would spend thirty rounds of IVF begging a doctor to save the child she had finally conceived, then hire people to do 

that to her within half an hour. 

Even if he were a fool, he realized something was wrong now. 

At that thought, he finally raised his bloodshot eyes. 

His voice was so hoarse it barely sounded human. 

“What… did you say?” 

Even after the doctor left, he still stood there, unable to come 

back to himself for a long time. 

Ethan’s men returned at dawn. 

“Mr. Whitmore, Ms. River’s mother passed away.” 

“She was too badly shaken. The rescue failed. It happened shortly before Ms. River jumped.” 

The news crashed over Ethan like ice water dumped from 

above. 

His entire body turned cold. 

He stood there and opened his mouth, but not a single word 

came out. 

After a long while, he looked at me lying silently on the 

hospital bed. 

The tubes covering my body made his eyes turn red in an 

instant. 

He slowly crouched down and buried his face in my palm, 

trembling all over. 

“Sophie… it’s all my fault. All of it.” 

He took a deep breath and choked out, 

“When you wake up, you can punish me however you want. Hit me, curse me, anything.” 

“We can still have a child. We definitely can.” 

“I’ll hire the best doctors. The best in the world. They’ll cure you…” 

He murmured to himself, his eyes slowly becoming certain. 

I loved him so much. 

I had always been so obedient. 

I would definitely forgive him. 

All these years, no matter what happened, as long as he coaxed me and apologized, I would always return to him. 

This time would be the same. 

As for Chloe… 

His eyes darkened as he rubbed my hand. 

“Sophie, I promise you, I’ll never contact Chloe again.” 

As soon as he finished speaking, several of his men rushed into the room and leaned close to whisper in his ear. 

“Ethan, we caught the men in the video.” 

“We caught them at the airport. They were about to board when our people stopped them.” 

Ethan’s eyes turned instantly sharp. 

“Where are they?” 

His men answered quickly, “Tied up at the warehouse by the docks.” 

Ethan tucked the corner of the blanket around me. 

When he turned and left, his face was terrifyingly dark.
