My Husband Faked Our Marriage to Please My Best Friend Chapter 01

When Ethan Whitmore came to pick me up from work, he suddenly handed me a marriage certificate through the car window.

“Actually, this certificate was fake. Getting back together with you was just a joke.”

Before I could react, he waved the brand-new certificate in his hand and smiled like he was savoring the memory.

“Yesterday, Chloe climbed into my lap and kissed me. It felt too good. I lost control and got a real one with her.”

The second betrayal poured over me like ice water.

I stared at him in disbelief, my voice shaking.

“Why?”

“Because you’re not so clear.”

He narrowed his eyes, admiring the way my eyes slowly turned red. Then he handed me a tissue with a half-smile.

“The first time, Chloe and I were sneaking around for three years before you found out.”

“So I made a bet with her. We wanted to see how long it would take you this time.”

His gaze fell on the fading mark on the side of my neck. He paused, then shrugged.

“She bet it would take you a year at most, so I left plenty of clues on purpose.”

“But I was tired of acting, and you still didn’t notice.”

“Today was the last day of the bet. I wanted her to win, just to make her happy.”

“So I had no choice but to tell you myself.”

Even after I sat down on the couch, my whole body was still shaking.

Ethan laughed at the sight of me falling apart.

He stuffed the crumpled rose in his hand into mine, then stroked my head like he was comforting a child.

“Remember the day of your dad’s funeral? Chloe and I were right next door. We went through a whole box of protection.”

“Only one wall between us. She was louder than your sobbing. It was pretty exciting.”

“That was the first time I’d ever met a girl as bold and wild as her. She was nothing like you. That was when I started falling for her.”

My head rang like something had exploded inside it.

I stared at him, my eyes wide with disbelief.

That day, I had almost cried myself unconscious in the funeral home.

When someone helped me out, Chloe’s legs were trembling. Her steps looked even weaker than mine.

Ethan had been standing beside me then. He glanced at her back and said softly, “She’s your best friend. Your father passed away, so she must be taking it hard too.”

I believed him.

One was my best friend.

The other was the man I loved most.

I had never doubted either of them.

But later, betrayal pierced through me like shards of ice.

The first time I caught them, I thought I would never forgive them again.

But then my mother became seriously ill, and I fainted outside the operating room.

Ethan ran around anxiously, handling everything for me.

Chloe held me and cried so hard she could barely breathe.

Maybe people became soft-hearted when they were at their weakest.

Ethan seemed to see right through me. He let out a mocking laugh.

“You really were too soft, Sophie. I only had to kneel by your mother’s hospital bed and put on a little show. A few bouquets, a few apologies, and you agreed to get back together with me.”

“Do you know how hard Chloe laughed back then?”

My fingers tightened suddenly.

Then his tone shifted.

“But Chloe thought the look on your face the first time you caught us together was hilarious.”

“So she asked me to arrange for you to work at the marriage license office. She wanted to see your face when you found out the certificate was fake, when you realized with your own hands that you’d been fooled a second time.”

My entire body went stiff.

By the time I came back to myself, my hand had already struck his face hard.

I snapped completely. I grabbed everything within reach and hurled it at him, my whole body trembling.

“Why would you do this to me? Why?!”

A flash of surprise crossed Ethan’s eyes.

He turned his head and wiped the corner of his mouth. Then he suddenly gave a soft laugh.

“How was it? Did you enjoy the show, my princess?”

I froze, staring at him in confusion.

The next second, his phone lit up without warning.

On the screen, Chloe burst into laughter.

“You did so well, honey. Tonight, I’ll reward you and let you take charge.”

I looked up in shock.

For one instant, it felt like all the warmth drained from my body.

“Chloe really wanted to see you lose control after you found out the truth, so she insisted I livestream it for her.”

“She kept making a fuss when I refused. You know her. She’s got that spoiled princess temper. She’s impossible when she wants something.”

I watched his mouth open and close.

My ears rang, and my vision went dark for a second.

I grabbed the edge of the table by instinct and barely kept myself from falling.

“Mwah.”

Chloe leaned close to the camera and kissed Ethan.

“Hurry back. I’ll be waiting.”

Then she lifted her chin at me.

“Sophie, you look even uglier when you cry this time. I’m very satisfied.”

The screen went dark.

Ethan acted as if nothing had happened.

His gaze swept over me carelessly, then suddenly stopped. He frowned and grabbed my hand.

“How did this happen?”
