I was woken by the voices outside my hospital room. 

“Is that her? She looks so innocent. I can’t believe she was 

that ruthless, using such an extreme way to get rid of her own baby.” 

“Seriously. Hiring people to ruin her own body? That’s a first. You really can’t judge people by their faces.” 

My heart lurched. 

With trembling hands, I picked up my phone. 

On the trending page, images of me being forced into 

humiliating positions stabbed into my eyes. 

The whispers outside the door overlapped with the abuse 

flooding the screen. 

In that instant, my heart pounded so hard my ears rang. 

With a bang, the door was shoved open again. 

The doctor on duty rushed in, his voice urgent. 

“Your mother saw the trending post just now. She was too 

shaken, and her condition took a turn for the worse. She needs 

surgery immediately. Go pay the fee now!” 

I stared at him blankly. 

It took me a long while to come back to myself. 

My mother was still waiting for me. 

At that thought, I mechanically wiped my tears away and braced myself against the bed to stand up. 

The bitter irony was that the five hundred thousand dollars 

Ethan had transferred to me had become my last lifeline. 

It was just enough to cover my mother’s surgery. 

But after the nurse took the card from me, her expression 

suddenly turned awkward. 

“Ms. River, there isn’t enough balance on this card.” 

I froze. 

Following her gaze, I looked at the transaction history. 

It showed that five minutes earlier, Ethan had transferred the 

money out in one lump sum. 

My hands shook as I called him, only to find that he had 

already blocked me. 

“Ms. River? Ms. River!” 

The nurse’s voice pulled me back. 

“The surgery can’t wait any longer. Please pay as soon as 

possible!” 

My mind went completely blank.

panic, I grabbed a stranger’s arm almost blindly. 

“Please, lend me some money. My mother is dying…” 

The person lowered his head and looked at me. 

He paused for a second, then burst out laughing. 

“Aren’t you Sophie from the trending post? What, hiring men 

to ruin yourself wasn’t enough? Now you’re dragging your 

own mother into it too?” 

More and more people gathered at the sound. 

“Don’t lend her money! Who knows what she’ll use it for? Don’t help someone like that.” 

“Honestly, maybe her mother is just like her. Maybe they both want to spend money hiring men to…” 

I tried to block out those vicious voices. 

My fingers dug hard into the floor as I knocked my forehead 

against the ground again and again. 

“Please. Please save my mother…” 

Blood from my forehead and from beneath me stained the 

floor red. 

Then a hand suddenly held my shoulder. 

“Ms. River… your mother is gone. Please come sign the paperwork.” 

My whole body stiffened. 

I knelt there for a very, very long time without moving. 

When Ethan stormed into the hospital to settle accounts with 

me, I was still in that same position. 

Without a word, he rushed up to me, his eyes bloodshot, his 

voice vicious. 

“Sophie, go apologize to Chloe! Because of that slap you gave her, her face is still swollen!” 

He cared that Chloe’s face was still swollen. 

But he couldn’t see the blood all over me. 

I gave a broken smile. 

My heart finally went completely cold. 

Seeing me like this only made him more irritated. 

“I’ll say it one last time. Go apologize to Chloe. Otherwise, your mother’s medical bills…” 

“Fine. I’ll apologize…” 

I slowly stood up. 

Under his stare, I walked to the window. 

Before he could react, I jumped. 

Ethan’s eyes widened in horror. 

He lunged forward, his expression tearing apart. 

“Sophie!”
