My Husband Faked His Death Chapter 13

I raised an eyebrow, wondering what he was up to now. “Jake, what are you doing at my door?”
He trotted over, took my hand, and rubbed his already cold palm against mine. “Are you cold? It’s freezing today, and you didn’t dress warmly enough. Don’t you know that breaks my heart?”
My stomach churned. The food from tonight nearly came back up because of his performance. I yanked my hand back. “What are you doing?”
His eyes instantly reddened.
“I’m just worried about you. You care about looking good, so you always dress too lightly when it’s cold. I’m afraid you’ll freeze. Without me, what would you do?”
“ When I was around, I could bring you a jacket and find ways to warm your hands. Without me, how would you take care of yourself? Let’s remarry. I really love you.”
I looked into his eyes, which were full of sincerity.
Once upon a time, that was true. Jake had been attentive—bringing me an umbrella on rainy days, adding layers when it snowed.
I used to think our love was irreplaceable, the best kind of love. But this same person called me clingy, faked his disappearance to get away from me, and cheated.
“Why should I?” I asked coldly.
