[Amelia’s POV]

We met at a coffee shop near campus.

She said Chase hadn’t slept all night. He’d stayed up drinking alone. She asked if we’d fought.

… He didn’t sleep all night, and you knew that?

I laughed bitterly. “So you know about us?”

“I know. Nina asked you to tutor him. He’s just being considerate of your feelings. It’s normal.”

So she didn’t know.

She stirred her juice with her straw, batting her big eyes. “I also know your dad’s store went under. Chase lent you a lot of money…”

I was shocked. “He told you that?”

Rosie lifted her chin, confident and sure. “There are no secrets between us.”

She pulled out her phone and dialed Chase right in front of me.

“Hey, Chase.” She put it on speaker.

“Last night you said Millie’s family is struggling, and she only tutors you to help make ends meet. My cousin needs a tutor too, and he’ll pay well —”

Chase cut her off, annoyed. “Her? I’ll find someone else for you. She’s really not that good. I only keep her around because she’s cheap.”

I took a deep breath and spoke to the phone. “Chase, we don’t need to meet at the library anymore.”

Silence.

After a long pause, he gritted out one word. “Fine.”

I went back to my normal routine after that. Classes, library, work.

At first I worried about running into him. But after a few days, I realized he hadn’t come back at all. I’d worried for nothing. If I hadn’t forced him to study, he never would have spent an afternoon in the library anyway.

He started texting me. Good mornings, good nights. Asking what I ate for breakfast, if I wanted coffee. I didn’t reply to any of it.

Friday after class, I was in line at the dining hall, thinking about my weekend shifts.

My phone rang. Nina.

“Millie, what do you want to eat this weekend? Tell me, I’ll have the chef get it ready —”

“Nina,” I cut her off. “Chase and I broke up.”

Silence on the other end.
