My Hockey Boyfriend Kept Me a Secret, So I Went Public with Someone Else Chapter 04

[Amelia’s POV]

I pulled out the umbrella I’d just bought. “No need. I have one.”

Who started the rumor that Logan was cold and distant? He was nothing but nice.

On the way back, my phone rang. Chase’s mom.

“Millie, I heard Chase hasn’t been at school. He’s off playing some esports tournament. That boy doesn’t take his studies seriously at all! The Bruins are scouting him. If his grades drop, he won’t get in. I’m counting on you to help him.”

I sneezed and shivered through Nina’s instructions in the rain.

As soon as I hung up, Chase called.

He launched right in. “Violet said you bullied her today?”

I tried to explain, but he kept going. “How could you embarrass a little girl in public like that?”

I was exhausted. “I just told the truth.”

“She’s young. Can’t you just let it slide? Whatever. Come over for dinner this weekend. Apologize to her. Say something nice. And bring a gift.”

He Venmoed me two hundred dollars with the note “buy something nice.”

Someone was yelling for him in the background. He hung up fast.

I rested my head against the bus window, each bump hitting my skull. The dull pain kept my mind clear.

Back in my dorm, my roommate ran at me with her phone.

“Rosie just got together with your guy!” she shrieked.

She shoved the screen in my face.

A photo. Rosie and Chase, one on each side of a giant stuffed toy, posing at some trendy restaurant. The caption read, “What’s it like having a best friend who just gets you?”

My roommate kept talking. “That place is impossible to book. Weren’t you the one who got a reservation last week? Did you go?”

“No. Something came up.”

I made an excuse and went to wash up. My chest ached.

Chase had promised to take me to that restaurant when it opened. He was great at claw machines — he said he’d win me the biggest prize.

I’d managed to get a reservation last week. Chase said he had plans with his team and couldn’t make it. Turns out he went with her instead.

The toy in the photo was the exact one I’d wanted.

I realized I’d accidentally liked the post. I laughed bitterly and unliked it.

I put my phone down and got in the shower. Halfway through, my roommate knocked. She said my phone was blowing up.

It was Chase.

He wanted to know why I’d liked and then unliked the photo.

I was confused.

“Rosie thinks you’re being shady. Because I went with her instead of you. She knew you liked that brand too, so she bought you a blind box. She asked me to give it to you.”

I took a breath. “If she knew I liked it too, why did she ask you to go alone with her?”

Chase’s tone went cold. “Millie, you’ve been weird ever since Rosie got back. She’s been nothing but nice to you. Can you stop twisting everything she does? She’s my oldest friend, and you’re my girlfriend. Have you ever thought about how hard this is for me?”

I felt a tightness in my chest.

“You’re right. I didn’t think about you at all.”

I hung up, turned off my phone, and went to sleep.

The next day, someone I didn’t expect came to find me.

Rosie.
