My Godfather Husband Gave Our Marriage a Zero, but Refused to Let Me Divorce Him Chapter 04

My Godfather Husband Gave Our Marriage a Zero, but Refused to Let Me Divorce Him Chapter 04

My mind went completely blank.

That couldn’t possibly be true.

The other shop clerks watched me, snickering behind their hands.

“There you are.” A voice called out from the doorway.

I spun around. Livia and Rocco had followed me.

Disappointment clouded Rocco’s eyes. “Every gift I gave you meant something, and now you’re trying to sell them off. If Livia hadn’t tipped me off, I never would have believed you were capable of this.”

Livia’s eyes glittered with contempt. “I told you she never cared about your presents. She only cared about their price tags.”

“I swapped out all the originals before she got the chance to flip them for cash. I’ve won our little bet. That makes all these gifts mine. At least I won’t be selling them secondhand.”

She slung one of my designer bags over her shoulder. The necklace around her neck had been my birthday present from Rocco.

I could have let all of that go. But then I spotted the bracelet on her wrist, and rage burned through me.

“Livia, give me back my bracelet.”

Rocco hadn’t bought it for me. It had belonged to my late grandmother, an heirloom I’d owned long before our marriage. Even during our poorest days, I’d never considered selling it.

“Yours? Everything you own came from Rocco.”

She slowly slipped the bracelet off her wrist and dangled it in front of my face, taunting me as if I were a dog.

“Here’s the deal. Strip off all the clothes Rocco bought you and hand them over, and I’ll give you back this cheap trinket.”

We had an audience. Phones came out, recording everything.

I froze, humiliated.

Rocco spoke up flatly. “Cut it out, Livia. She can’t take the joke.”

I stared at Rocco in disbelief.

He knew how precious that bracelet was to me, yet he never corrected Livia when she claimed he’d bought it.

Whispers grew louder around us.

My patience snapped. I lunged forward and grabbed Livia’s wrist, trying to snatch the bracelet away.

Rocco stepped between us and shoved me hard. I crashed to the floor.

A glass display case toppled over and slammed into me.

The faint ache in my abdomen exploded into searing agony, and blood trickled down my forehead.

Panic flashed across Rocco’s face. He reached down to pull me up. “Odette, are you hurt? What about the baby?”

Only then did he remember our child. He didn’t know it was already gone.

I pushed his hands away and finally said the words aloud. “I want a divorce.”

Rocco’s features hardened. “Are you threatening to leave me to get your way?”

He glanced at Livia. “You were right again.”

Livia patted his arm, utterly sure of herself.

“Don’t worry. All this talk of divorce is just reverse psychology. She won’t walk away from her cash cow. Leave her alone for a while and let her cool off.”

“As for us, we’ll grab our luggage and head out for our trip to the Maldives.”

I let out a bitter, hollow laugh. That Maldives trip had been my canceled honeymoon.

Once they left, I limped back to the townhouse.

I hired a lawyer and drew up divorce papers.

I didn’t want everything. But I was going to claim what was rightfully mine.

My mother’s surgery date was almost here.

Desperate, I took a job at an upscale private club and scraped together the thirty thousand dollars I needed.

The second I arrived at the hospital, my phone blew up with notifications.

Livia had posted a video of me working at the club online.

Her caption read: How greedy can a marriage leech get?
