His lips moved.

I kept going, “After you got admitted, you still asked me for living expenses. Three hundred a month, like clockwork.”

“What did you spend my money on? Taking Savannah out? Motels?”

“That’s—that’s bullshit!”

His voice cracked, but his eyes were already darting away.

I was done dancing around it.

I straightened up and looked down at him.

“We’re done.”

Liam blinked.

Then, suddenly, he laughed—a sneer I’d never seen on him before.

“Done? Fine.”

He stepped back, hands in his pockets, his head tilted.

“You think dumping me means you’ll do better? You’ve got no direction. You can’t even keep an offer. What do you have to be so high and mighty about?”

He was getting cocky now, like he’d finally dropped the act.

“Honestly, Jessica, what are you even good for besides writing other people’s code? You couldn’t even hold on to a single admission. Who do you think you are?”

I cut him off coldly.

“Liam. Who told you I didn’t take the offer?”

His mouth snapped shut.

The smugness vanished.

His pupils shrank as he locked eyes with me.

“What are you talking about?”

“I said—who told you I’m not going out-of-state?”

I repeated it slowly, watching his face shift from arrogance to confusion, then to a flicker of panic.

His throat bobbed.

His voice went thin.

“You said you weren’t going… You said you’d stay and take the grad exam…”

“I changed my mind.”

I pulled out my phone and opened Ashford University’s confirmation page.

The screen light washed over his pale face.

“Full scholarship. AI track. I leave next month.”

Liam froze.

His gaze locked onto the school logo.

His Adam’s apple moved up and down, but nothing came out.

At the end of the hall, Savannah had followed us out.

She leaned against the wall, looking even worse than Liam.

She knew better than anyone.

If I left, who would finish her capstone?

I put my phone away and patted Liam’s shoulder lightly, like I was chatting about lunch options.

“From now on, ask your new girlfriend for spending money.”

I turned and walked away without looking back.

Behind me, Savannah’s shrill voice cut through the air, “Jess! Wait!”

I didn’t stop.

The night wind hit my collar—cold—but something burned in my chest.

Not anger.

For the first time in years, it was my own fire.

Back in my dorm, I listed everything I needed for my move out-of-state and put both Liam and Savannah on Do Not Disturb.

My roommate Zoey popped her head over the top bunk.

“Jess… are you really going?”

“Yeah.”

“What about Liam…”

“We broke up.”

Zoey gasped, sat up straight, and stared at me wide-eyed.

“I knew that guy was bad news! Savannah would always come find you, and he’d magically be waiting downstairs too. I thought it was weird!”

I paused and let out a bitter laugh.

Everyone else saw it.

I was the only one blind.

My phone buzzed nonstop.

It was Liam’s message bomb:

[Jessica, calm down. Let’s talk.]

[Don’t be impulsive. Moving out-of-state isn’t easy. What are you going to do alone over there?]

[I admit I didn’t tell you everything, but I really do care about you.]

And the last one:

[Just decline the offer. Let’s start over.]

I read that final line and laughed out loud.

Decline the offer?

He still thought he mattered that much.

I didn’t reply.

I just blocked him.

Then I opened my investment app and double-checked the Summit Capital Growth Fund launch date.

March fifteenth.

Twenty thousand dollars—eight times over meant a hundred and sixty thousand.

That, plus equity, would be more than enough to keep me on my feet in a new state.

I closed my eyes.

Starting tomorrow, my life belonged to no one but me.
